January 15, 2005Old Town, Tallinn, Estonia
Itīs my third day and Iīm surrounded by a different kind of wall... the one that circles the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Old Town in Tallinn. Itīs a beautiful part of the city and one that caters mostly to tourists like myself. I am staying with fellow CouchSurfing member Margit (see www.couchsurfing.com) and she has been an immensely kind and generous host. Itīs cold but not as cold as residents say itīs been in past years, and definitely the lack of snow changes the landscape so that it doesnīt look as picturesque as one would believe looking at postcards. Nonetheless, I have met many new people - mostly through Margit - and had a chance to join the large queue to buy alcohol that forms just before 11 pm, as you are unable to buy alcohol after that time anywhere in the city. :) If you have a chance to visit Tallinn, you should definitely go to the Linnamuuseum (City Museum) which is cheap and provides a detailed account of Tallinnīs past - a history which depicts the various points at which Tallinn was in the hands of other peoples (Danes, Swedes, Russians and the Germans briefly during WWII). Tomorrow, I leave for the university town of Tartu where I will be staying with another host, this time someone Iīve met through the Hospitality Club!
