You Read, You Buy

Monday was a dreary day but I enjoyed wandering through the streets of Basel on my own. Don gave me some good directions and input on what attractions to visit. Unfortunately, it seems Monday’s in Europe are not the best for museum touring as most of them are closed. After checking about 6, one was open! Sometimes I need a break from all of the Artsy museums so I was in luck when I discovered the Toy and Puppet museum was open. 4 floors of teddy bears, dolls, puppets, you name it. It was actually pretty fascinating as there was such detail in every scene that whoever put together the rooms has more patience than I can stand. From the mini plates, napkins, pastry’s to tiny school desks and books to the scissors in the barber shop. A child’s heaven.

I continued on to the Monster Church and was surprised when photos were allowed. You could purchase some post cards and small books within the church. Some America gentlemen were looking through a book but were told they could not look at it unless they bought it. I’ve noticed several things like this happening in Europe which I’m not a huge fan of. When I was in the Frankfurt airport I was sitting at a chair near the Hagan Das stand when I was told I could not sit there unless I bought something. I guess service and hospitality are not their thing.

After taking a boat over the Rhine River, walking around the Marktplatz, and window shopping on Freie Strasse I was much in the mood for some American food. I made a stop for a medium size fries and small Cola at McDonald’s and was blown away by the $8 it cost me. Learned my lesson.

All in all, good day. About 7 hours of walking and enjoying my alone time and really getting to know Basel.
