Sound of Music trap

When I think about it, 6 weeks in Europe is simply not enough. For some reason I feel like I have to see and do everything all at once but I know I’ll visit Europe plenty more in the future, if not live there. I’m just an eager beaver these days and want to make sure my days are not wasted. Although I do realize it’s sometimes those lazy days of just strolling around town that I’ll fall into a hidden gem that’s not talked about in any of the guide books.

First on my list is Switzerland. I’ll be flying into Basel as my home-base is somewhat close to the area. The Dunkers, family friends who we’ve known for nearly 20 years have graciously opened up their home for me. I remember when Mrs. Dunkers was pregnant with her twin boys who are now in high school. I’ve not seen them since they’ve moved nearly 10 years ago yet they have been so helpful in my planning. And the best part, they are taking me on a week long ski trip in the Swiss Alps. But I would like to think my parents would do the same; let their friends children stay for an extended visit if visiting from another country. I’ll also be visiting other areas of Switzerland such as Zurich and Luzerne. While in Zurich I will be visiting and staying with a friend of my Aunts. Another generous offer to stay with someone I have never even met.

After the ski trip it’s off to Rome. And wow, another act of kindness. David, a friend from my hometown church goes to the American School in Rome. I’ll be staying with him and he has offered to be my personal tour guide and help me learn Italian since he is fluent. From there it’s off to Siena, Assisi, Florence, Pisa, and Venice. I’ll obviously hit up all of the major attractions but I’ve been told about some secret spots not everyone hears about. And my main goal, meeting and hanging out with as many locals as possible and coming back being able to at least converse in Italian. Unfortunately my ancestors are from Naples and Sicily which are two areas I won’t be visiting this go-around simply because they are so far south. That will be saved for another visit so I can explore where I come from.

From there it’s off to Austria. I’ll be honest, I did not know what was in Austria other than some gorgeous rolling hills and ski slopes. But after my research I’ve discovered it’s home of The Sound of Music and it’s famous tour. Ok, maybe not famous but something all of the tourists should experience. I know I sure am. I heard it was actually not that bad of a tour (according to Rick Steves) and you even get to sing some classics on the bus. I am 16 going on 17 wouldn’t you like to know… After Salzburg I’m headed to Innsbruck but just for a day. I’m not sure what is in Innsbruck but all I know is that it’s worth a visit.

My train will then sweep me off to Paris for a good 4 days. Experiencing Paris alone seems somewhat depressing since it has that reputation of being a city of love and romance, but love and romance are simply not in the cards these days and it won’t stop me from packing my days full of spectacular sites. There is so much to see and do in Paris that I hope 4 days is enough.

Bruges and Brussels means my trip is coming close to an end. I’ve still got some research on these areas but I’ve heard Belgium is known for their chocolate. Ah, so that is where Belgium chocolate comes from. I eat chocolate roughly 6 times a day so I don’t expect to come back lighter after this trip, even after the miles of walking.

And finally it’s off to the famous Red Light District of Amsterdam. Hopefully I’ll be staying with my lovely co-worker and good friend Angie who is supposed to be relocated there by then (if all goes well). But if not, I’m somewhat hesitant on staying at the hostels here. From all the reviews it seems they are all full of druggies, and not just pot heads. Call me naive but I’m not into the pot scene. I may have to suck it up and fork a few extra bucks out for a hotel.

My 6 weeks is packed full of excitement. And I’m overwhelmed by all of the people who have offered advice, helped me plan, and accepted me into their humble abodes. And if any of you readers have some tips on things to see and do, please comment.

Wow. It’s rare to see someone our age follow their dreams and be passionate about life the way that you are. Most people who have the resources and opportunity are only worried about making more money, and would never consider taking a risk. It is refreshing to see someone living their life on their own terms. I wish you the best of luck in your travels, and I know you will have someone of the best experiences of your life. Good luck, and God bless.

I’d say don’t discount great chocolate from Switzerland. It’s everywhere, especially in Basel & Zurich. Don’t forget to try some fondue while you are skiing, or possibly a fondue chinoise. Get some marzipan chocolate from migros - cheap and fantastic!

I’m not sure how you are going from Austria to Paris, but that will be a long journey. I find Paris far too expensive and mostly great with a friend. You can visit a lot of museums and walk a lot but just watch yourself there.

I loved Belgium but the one thing I hated was not having enough room to buy more! haha
