Eating Shit

After a train ride and 2 bus rides to the middle of nowhere, I made it to the Dunkers.  They had rented a 3 bedroom apartment type place in Samnaun Switzerland for a week of skiing.  I arrived roughly 3 days after their arrival as I figured I only needed a few days of skiing.  As the bus took me up into the small ski town I could not help but be in heaven as I stared at the lush trees and snow camped mountains that surrounded me.  The scenery quickly reminded me of why I need to live near the mountains.

The following day Lisa and I stayed in to relax, read books, and cook.  I had to prepare myself for the ski slopes as my only other time skiing was last year in Breckenridge.  In Europe, the ski slopes are blue, red, black.  And while the blue’s are supposed to be equivalent to our greens, I had a hunch they would be much more intimidating.

So Don, the twins and I (Lisa no longer skis) made our way up the Gondola, strap on our skis/snowboards and we’re off?  Not so fast.  Don has me going down a red slope first thing!  I’m 26, no longer fearless as the 3 year old kids you see conquering the reds.  Within 20 seconds I eat my first pile of shit.  We finally make it to the blue, and I am right, much harder than our greens.  But I’m determined to get over my fear as it’s simply a confidence issue with me.  By the afternoon I’m speeding down the slopes like a pro.  I still ate it more times than I had planned which included whacking into a guys behind and heading straight into a snow cliff.

By my second day even Don was impressed with my mad speed skills.  I never even knew I could physically move that fast.  You could hear me screaming with joy from miles away as I whipped down those slopes.  My confidence was top notch, even with the Caution signs that read something in German like “Danger, one wrong step and you could be off a cliff.”  A few falls later, the day was over.  I finished the week with another day off the slopes to go hiking into the mountains.

It was a perfect week of skiing in Samnaun Switzerland.  And seeing as it is on the border, I was actually skiing half the day in the Swiss Alps and half the day in the Austrian Alps.  There goes my superwoman powers again.  The sun shined everyday and not a cloud was above us.  As we went higher and higher into the mountains the sky became more and more navy blue.  Picturesque week and unforgettable skiing.
