No more cheese please

So far Salzburg has to be my favorite city. It´s not nearly as big as Vienna, which I like as I feel more in control of my surroundings. Everything is within walking distance and everything is beautiful to look at.

I arrived yesterday afternoon and headed to my hostel, YoHo. It´s clean, safe, quiet, centrally located, and I´ve already made several friends. Upon my arrival I quickly booked my Sound of Music Tour, a major splurge as it was 30 Euros but 4 hours of the Sound of Music! We visited every location where the Sound of Music was filmed. BUT, only the outside scenes of the movie were filmed in Salzburg; all of the inside scenes were filmed in Hollywood. We had an energetic tour guide who sang nearly the entire time, and the guests were supposed to sing along but I just sat there and smiled. We made many stops throughout the tour; all of the backyard scenes, the lake where they fall off of the boat, the famous hill, the trees where she sang I Have Confidence, the trees where the children swung in their curtain clothes, the church where they were married, and much more I can´t remember at the moment. Plus, we learned a lot of secrets and hidden facts about the movie. Should have watched it before I left as I forgot some of the scenes.

The hostal has a great happy hour and cheap food so last night I stayed in with some of my bunk-mates and hit the sac early as I was out late the night before in Vienna. I was up early and ready to go this morning.

I followed Rick´s self guided walk stopping at all of the major attractions and walking in each Cathedral. About half way through I came to a wonderful market. Meats, cheese, olives, fruits, veggies, breads, flowers…everything a market is supposed to have. I went a little crazy buying a big hunk of blue cheese, bread, olives, grapefruit, and something that resembled a crab cake but was made with cheese. I ate everything in one sitting. Delicious!

I decided to hike up to the top of the Hohensalzburg Fortress instead of taking the funicular, figured after those tasty snacks I needed to burn off a few calories. Upon arriving at the top you were greeted with an amazing view of the entire city. I must add that nearly everyday I have traveled has been nothing but sunny and not a cloud in the sky, this being one of those days. Perfect for picture taking. And right before I sat down here to update you all, I visited Mozart’s residence and learned everything I need to know about his life. The English speaking audio-guides are so informative!

Back to the hostal for a quick nap as I´m headed out for the evening with my new Australian friends. Cio!
