Huacachina

i wanted to write yesterday, but couldn´t as we were too busy adventuring. we started the day early with a very packed bus ride to the coast, to a town called paracas, it´s really more of a district of pisco (where we had our first, but certainly not last, pisco sour–no worries, grandma, not as strong as rumoured). from there, we took a boat ride to the islas ballestas, off the coast of paracas. the boat ride was crazy. look forward to some very classic shots of cassidy and i in fishy orange vests. we hope to have shots of some very awesome mullets we saw too. there were all kinds of birds. the birds actually made a kind of paint by numbers landscape against the sky and we were really overwhelmed, and of course, pooped on. there were also sea lions and seals. we then went back to the dock town of paracas and from there took anothere bus ride to a museum, where we learned a lot about the wildlife of coastal peru. after that, we went to a rock formation called the cathedral and the red beach, which were both gorgeous. our favorite part of the day, though, was lunch. we ate right on the water….a different version of this than in california, as i mean actually on the rocks, i could touch the tide from where i was sitting…we got pictures of this too. had my first real peruvian food, rice, potatoes, and fish. the best was the snack before lunch, almost popped corn…in such huge kernals…perfect with our cervezas. then, it was time to go back to pisco where we hopped on a bus to ica, and then took a taxi to huacachina. we met some fabulous nurses on the bus, they were so young and so interested in talking to us white girls. they wrote out some slang words so we could sound cool. they also invited us to a party on friday, but i´m not sure we´ll be here. we got into the hostel, casa de arena, and it was like real world peru. there was already a party going on, loud music, people around the pool, etc. we met a guy named renee who talked us into barbeque, interestingly, his dad lives in fremont, ca. we ate dinner with some israeli guys, who were very nice. it´s been very interesting to see people´s perspectives on the world. i also adopted a peruvian dog (not permanently, of course) and now likely have fleas. he was sooooo cute. he put his paws in my lap and slept curled up by me outside. he also pushed his nose into my door and came into my room. que lindo. well, there are other people waiting on the internet! much love to everyone! thanks for posting, and we´ll write soon…on to nazca.
love,
darcy

What a beautiful description of your trip to Huacachina. It sounds absolutely wonderful except for the dog with fleas. I could have done without that experience. I have been watching Wimbleton. Hope at least one of my favorites win. Talked to Kathy today. Did I ever mention she is “raising” two hives of bees. She was asking me why they were bunched outside of the hive. I said maybe a bad Queen, but what do I know. All’s they ever did was sting me. My yard is beginning to look nice but I wish Lona could come up and help with some final touches. I will print out your story and read it over a few hundred times. Then try to find the names on my map. Keep Grandpa John and Gramps with you. Love to you and “Mama Cass”.

Well, pooh pooh. Mom said some of my postings went under your previous stories so please look under Pre-planning for two of them and under Miraflores for one more. It is so typical that I would mess up. Found a lot of names similar to Huacachina but not the exact one, but I did find Paracas Pt , Ica and of course Pisco. They had that one in capitol red letters. Haha. I have also found Nazca, so I see that you are slowly moving south. Explain to Cass that I give nicknames to everyone and the real Mama Cass was a beautiful singer. Love from Grandma Dork and two others who had better being doing their job. Grandpa John and Gramps

Enjoyed reading about your coastal and ocean adventures…. especially your dining on the rocks. Sounds like you are meeting interesting people. Thought you would want to know that Amy Cozens had a baby boy. Laura said that Michelle N. was with her for the birth of the baby. I guess Shawna T. is due in two weeks. We are in a heat wave, and I think it will be over 90 degrees for 4th of July. I saw Heavy today, and he said he accidently started two fires with his tractor, but he was able to get both of the fires out. I hate that fire season is here…. It brings back BAD memories. Keep up with the writing….We love to hear from you. Love you!! Mom

    Wow,
It made me tired just listening to all of the things you did in just one day! I need to get me a map so I can follow along with your descriptions. I was thinking that if you wrote about all of this and could get someone to publish it, maybe you could write the trip of on your taxes! I finally got hold of the Black Historical Society following a lot of non response from them, and they want me to give a presentation to their board on July 25. I told her I was not much of a speaker. I bet she thought I was being modest…not honest. Boy will she be surprised! I have started throwing at lunch and it works better physically and time wise for me. Glad to hear you are getting to cover so much ground.

Eating by the beach on the rocks sounded awesome- food always seems to taste better in places like that. I am glad to hear that more people than just me adopt stray animals in foreign countries. I befriended a dog in Costa Rica who I named Fernando. I think more than anything, he enjoyed the beef jerky I had brought. :) Sounds like you are having fun!

P.S.- This week mom’s kindergarten student (that I told you about in a previous reply) asked me if I smelled anything stinky and I asked him if he had done anything and he said “I farted” and then cracked up. That is like the third time it’s happened! He also eats his boogers and cracks up about it too.

Hi, I just read your notes and what others have written you. I,ve been busy with yardwork, watering, and making fairy gardens. When I,m resting I write letters and work on a family tree I’m making.
Today we all received a note from Teresa. They were eating raw oysters and having Castle beer. They have a lot of vineyards there so they,ve been enjoying the vino. Anyway from where they were they could see the southern most piece of land of S. Africa. They had seen 40 elephants. Your mom and Laura are here. They need to do some errands and get back up the hill.
It sounds like your are having a good trip but do be careful. Love, Meemo

    Darcy,
TGIF probably has no relevance to you right now, but for those of us still slogging our way through the working world…TGIF!!!!!!!!!! Tonight I went up to the graveyard and prepped the place for the concrete stand for Dad’s marker. Tomorrow I will pour it. Today I got a phone call from a man who films for KPBS. I am to meet him at the cemetery Sunday afternoon to show him the place. He wants me to say a few things on camera. The purpose is to make a presentation to the government for grant money for a national series on cemeteries. You think I ought to be chewing to add charactor to my spot? Mom and Laura are down the hill shopping so I rented a video for me and the cat. Later gater.
    Love Dad
