Children’s Surgical Centre
CSC is where I’ve decided to work at. It’s a nonprofit organization started by a physician from Fairbanks. It is an interesting turn of events and a case of limited degrees of separation that brought CSC to my attention. Pam B’s brother, Mike Kinney, went to highschool in Fairbanks with Dr. Gollogly’s son, or at least his last name was the same. Dr. Gollogly is the director of CSC and started the organization.
Even more interesting than that is how I came to find out about CSC. Jenny Armentrout’s parents, the Lindseys had traveled to Khmer a few years ago. Upon their return to Alaska they wanted to do something for the people of Khmer and found CSC and it’s connection to Alaska. Jenny found out my plans and got me in touch with her dad Mark. Mark then sent me to Jim Carmichael, who works with the organization and has been a great source of information.
Jim came across as very sincere and everyone from the organization I’ve been in contact with has been very nice. The exception would be Dr. Gollogly, but I’ll attribute that to his being very busy and maybe because he’s crochety old man. But I think this is a great organization.
Although I communicated at length with Jim and Dr. Gollogly, I didn’t settle on CSC until recently. Although I liked the Alaska connection, I was also interested in finding some type of funding for this trip. But none were to be found for my specific objectives. But really, the only thing that’s changed is my time frame. Instead of committing to being there for a full year, I am instead buying a one way ticket there and will come back when I need to.
I spent the morning looking at tickets and dates. I actually found a great flight lasting 15 hours from Anchorage to Taipei to Phnom Penh and it was also the cheapest. Most other flights I looked at would have routed me through Seattle and cost me 35 hours of flight and layover time.

So it looks like this is going to happen for real. I just need to make it to the travel doctor and get some shots now. That in itself is a bit of an issue since I waited so late to make an appointment. One of the recommended vaccines is for Japanese Encephalitis which requires three injections over 30 days. A problem since my appointment isn’t till the 15th and I leave the 22nd. Hmmm. Maybe I’ll just bring some extra DEET.

Savuth, be safe - we all will be with you in spirit - what you are doing is a great thing in many ways. As James stated in his way, I will state, there is always room for you to go on a hunt where we don’t see an animal…..however, if you come with Ali - I need to be more prepared.
