Africa: Arusha - Ngorongoro Crater

The next morning was pretty chilled out, a few walked the hour it took to get into town and did some shopping at the markets, and the rest took our time packing up and catching up on reading and writing. At 2pm we packed into four landcruisers and drove the four hours to get to Ngorongoro Crater, an ancient volcano almost 30kms wide, abundant with wildlife including the black rhinosaurus, one of the last two of the ‘Big 5′ animals we hadn’t yet seen.

We set up camp and were served dinner by the campsite cooks (the best meal yet, we were thinking of kidnapping them) before a performance by a local african dance/acrobatic troupe who entertained us with traditional music, drums, acrobatics and dancing bare foot on the dusty red sand. It was a world away from driving and camping, which sometimes made us forget we were in africa amongst amazing cultures and wildlife. It was a beautiful performance, and we fell asleep soon after to the sounds of the crickets and frogs beneath the stars.
