Kathmandu

Our first night in Nepal at an excellent Thai restaurant

Pete Writes: The initial feeling of arriving in a new country was really exciting. We managed to get our visa ok, after 45minutes queuing! We then jumped in a prepaid taxi to the guest house. The driver seemed really friendly, until he started to try and push his guesthouse on us. Luckily 4 weeks in India had helped us to build up a tolerance to touts and scammers. We insisted that we wanted to go to our guest house, but he would not drop the sale. It ended up with me and Chloe making a dash for it whilst the driver threw some insults and slammed his doors in a hissy fit :)

Flags

After checking into our guest house we decided to have a look at Thamel, the main tourist area in Kathmandu. It was a refreshing change to see lots of westerners and loads of choice of restaurants that did not involve curry! Needless to say we have eaten Thai, Italian and Mexican since being here. Oh and we have some really good coffee and cake:)

Both Chloe and I have also felt a bit peaky over the last few days, so we have not really done too much sight seeing (apart from the bathroom) We managed to walk to Durbhar square which was really interesting and have also found that every town has a Durbhar square, that makes things slightly confusing.

Dragon in the Square

Chloe Writes: First impressions of Nepal are all good. The people are very smiley and friendly and the place is a lot cleaner that India (but that’s not hard). Thamel has a very holiday like feel with all the bars and restaurants, there are also countless trekking shops with a load of rip-off gear such as North Face. Pete compared it to a ski resort for hikers. As Pete said we both haven’t felt well since we got here but the show must go on and we are heading to the Royal Chitwan National Park tomorrow. :)

Hawker
There are lots of Hawkers in Thamel, although it was quite refreshing to meet one that wasn’t selling Tigar Balm or wooden elephants (No Tash, I haven’t brought one of these….Yet!)

    Hi Marc,

Good to hear from you, I cant believe it was 17 years ago, i remember when you went. I’m sure things have changed massively since then with tourism etc..

We are in the jungle at the moment but are heading to Pokhora in the anapurna mountain rage to do a 2 week treck. Do you remember which treck you did?

Love to Alison & the boys.

    Hi Mum,

Were both feeling better in time for our trek, an exhausting 2 hour jungle walk in the heat seemed to have shaken off what ever we had.

Pete’s considering a head shave later today.

Take care, lots of love x
