Christmas and New Year

Chloe Writes: Our guesthouse in Bangkok was situated about a 5 minute walk from the koh san road, in the heart of a network of narrow streets lined with stalls selling the most tempting fruit (including fantastic mangos - my favorite), Thai food and stalls who claim to buy “anything”.
Despite all the lights and the Christmas trees, it couldn’t have felt less Christmassy, probably something to do with the 30 degree heat. Our friends Jim & Alex arrived to meet us on Christmas Eve and we spent the first part of Christmas day trying to find a traditional xmas dinner. After a trip on a ferry, then a sky train, we ended up at an English bar called the Barbican and had a fantastic turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Then after we went to a few bars for some drinks then back to the Koh San road for a dance.

Unfortunately we didn’t get the opportunity for much sight-seeing in Bangkok but we hope to return at some point after the wedding. Our next stop was Koh Pha-Ngan, a small Island south east of mainland Thailand. After an overnight bus trip and a ferry we arrived on Chao Pao beach for yet another beach hut stay.
On New Years Eve during the day we headed to one of the other beaches on mopeds for the most amazing snorkeling I have ever experienced. We were literally surrounded by thousands of fish (I kid you not), I even got nipped by one who in a feeding frenzy (I’m not sure what they were feeding on) thought I was part of the deal. In the evening we headed to the south of the island to Haad Rin for the full moon party, minus the full moon, where around 10,000 other people were celebrating the New Year.

Pete Writes: Bangkok is a very busy, organised and cunning city carefully and politely extracting the Baht from every western traveler’s pocket. That said, I loved it. The hustle and bustle, and the crazy rik-shaw drivers who seem to have just failed to qualify for formula 1
Jim and Alex arrived for the festive season, and have definitely made it one to remember. On Xmas day we had a lush dinner and a few bevie’s then went for a wonder around down town finishing with a quick game of ping pong (Alex has a mean back hand).
It was then time to hot-foot it down to the islands in time for the New Year celebrations.
After finding a quiet cove (with a lovely hut facing out to sea) it was a bit of a culture shock to see so many people on one stretch of sand on the 31st. It was carnage, with fireworks being let off all over the place and people passed out on the sand (one guy had even sculpted his own pillow).
So now we are planning our next move, as per usual we are on beach time and finding it hard to get moving. That and the fact the rain has not stopped for the last 3 days
We both hope you all had a HAPPY XMAS and have a prosperous 2008 x x

Shame about the camera, hope it is soon sorted out - it means you have to write more words when there are no pictures!
What day are your guests arriving in Koh Samui? Most of us could be on the same flight?!!
See you very soon.

Ah, the beach parties…. good times :o) Did you drink yourself sober with buckets?
Yeah there really isn’t much to do on those beaches. Koh Samui is good if you hire a car or bike and head up the mountains, and do the circuit all around the island.
Have an amazing wedding, we wish we were there. We’ll be thinking of you :o)
We often pass your house on the way to Asda, and it all looks in one piece! ;o)
Missing you heaps xx
