street food

Pete Writes: We arrived at Chang Mai early in the morning and the first thing I noticed was that the temperature was a lot cooler than in Bangkok (especially as I still had shorts and a t-shirt on). It is also a lot more laid back than the capital, so much so we only managed to shop and complete a cooking course :) Mum and Dad were still in Chang Mai after there trek (post wedding) and we spent a nice chilled 3 days with them. Eating, shopping and more eating!!

Completing a Thai cooking course was one of the major things we wanted to do on this trip, we managed to cram it in the day before we left. It started with a visit to the local market to pick up all of the ingredients and see all the food in its purist form (including pigs heads and tanks of fish). The course was really good, and the food was not bad either and hopefully between the two of us we should be able to cook up a feast :)

As our visa runs out tomorrow we are heading towards the Laos border later and onto our 5th country, back onto the backpacker circuit..

Giant reclining Buddha

Chloe Writes: My second visit to Bangkok, (and Pete’s third), was brief but most certainly busy. After a rather uncomfortable overnighter (bus and train) and a very hairy moped taxi ride with all our bags, we arrived somewhat bleary eyed back to the place where we began our Thailand adventure.

The first day went past in a blur sorting out visas and marriage stuff, but the second day we decided to act like tourists and see some sites. We started at the Grand Palace, no longer a residence to the king but home to the emerald Buddha (that’s made from Jade not Emerald) and the most elaborate gold plated temple and statues. From there we visited Wat Pho and the home of Thailand’s largest reclining Buddha, again covered in gold it was an amazing site.

With no rest for the wicked it was on to the train station for a 12 hour journey (and yet another overnighter), North, to Chang Mai.
