My visit with the “Ladies of Luxembourg”
Luxembourg-
After my departure from Morocco, I flew to Luxembourg to visit the two ladies (Kate and Danielle) I met in Santiago, Chile in March 2008. On my plane ride from Fes, Morocco to Luexembourg I thought, ‘great, this will be a chance for me to relax before heading to my next destinations (Egypt and Jordon)……..boy, was I wrong! From the point of pick-up at the airport the ‘festivities’ began!
The nine day activities went as follows: Friday (the first full day I was in Luxembourg), I toured Luxembourg City during the day and at night went to a friend of Kate’s and Danielle’s for drinks and from there went to a private-party at an Irish pub. The party consisted of free beer and champagne (the pub was rented out for three days-for the private party…we only attended day one) and a fairly descent cover band. The following evening (Saturday),I met more of Kate’s and Danielle’s friends at yet another Irish Pub (wow, those Irish get around) to watch the European 2008 Football Finals…..which is a big, big, deal in Europe, because the winners go to the World Cup (I think I got that right..I’m American…forgive me).
The following morning (Sunday), was Mother’s Day in Europe, which we celebrated by playing “Bole” (see photos) with Danielle, Kate’s father, brother and her mother’s cousin and his wife (they were visiting from South Africa). After we played Bole we had a traditional English Roast (Kate’s mother is British). Once we finished lunch we ventured out with Kate’s brother to a party and had some beers and socialized with the native Luxembourgers….are you seeing a pattern yet??? lots of beers and lots of socializing, good times!
On Monday of the following week, I stayed with Danielle and went into Luxembourg City for more sightseeing and lunch. In the evening we went back to the same Irish Pub, as mentioned above and had a some drinks and watched, yet another round of the Football Finals. I watched quite a few football matches at many pubs during my stay in Luxembourg (the finals are only on for three weeks and one of the weeks was during my visit).
When Friday approached we packed up the car and headed for Strasbourg, France for the night….where I sampled a traditional ‘Alsace’ dish called, Flammekuche- which is a thin crust pizza (made from beer), covered in a cream sauce topped with various toppings of your choice, but the traditional topping and my favorite is bacon and onion…….so delicious!
The following morning we packed the car up and headed back to Luxembourg for Danielle’s twenty-fifth birthday party….and party did we ever!!!!
Overall my time in Luxembourg was wonderful, it was great to meet up with two people I had just met months before during my travels. They were gracious and hospitable hostesses and I hope to return the favor to them and/or the lovely, lovely other friends I have made in Luxembourg during my stay!
