Just Words
Sorry for the lack of updates about anything really travel related yet. I’ve got the pictures, but I’m going to have to add them later. And I’m going to break with my general style and just write several small stories of the last couple weeks. I also accidently managed to delete the post about San Francisco, which I may or may not be motivated to rewrite later.
I flew into Rome and immediately got lost. Having your cousin have to go to the tourist police because you’re 2 hours late is a little embarrassing. But I did what is almost always the best introduction to a city: I got lost.
Any city with significant topography (I assume you’ve heard of the famous hills of Rome), especially an older city without a logical street plan, is easy to get lost in if you’ve never been before. Especially if you’ve resolved not to use a map except as a last resort. And most especially when you decide to use said map, you realize you’re not on it.
It was ok though - I finally showed up (coincidentally taking the same route that Julius Ceaser did when he lead his army into Rome), and proceeded to get a great introduction to the city from my cousins. It was a nice contrast: a tour from a great guide where I can just relax and be amazed at the architecture, art, and history; and my own wanderings where I have no idea what’s what or where’s where, and the biggest landmark I found was the Bulgarian Embassy. Add a couple espressos, a great Italian dinner, and especially being around family (even if I haven’t seen them in 10 years), and you’ve got a great first day.
