Arrived in Casablanca

I arrived in Casablanca on Friday. Royal Air Maroc gives great service. When I left the ladies room in Mohammed V Airport, I reeked of smoke. The people are chain smokers here. It’s a good thing they are not allowed to smoke on the plane!

The 1940s movie classic ‘Casablanca’ with Humprey Bogart was filmed here. One of my goals was to see the newly refurbished Rick’s Bar where many scenes were filmed. They say this bar/restaurant is very popular with the tourists.

I stayed at Hotel Azur. It was nice and comfortable though not a four or five star. But since it was free, courtesy of Royal Air Maroc, it was fine with me. The transport to and from the hotel plus lunch were also free. Can’t beat that!
I found a driver named Moustapha who gave a great 2 hour tour. It included the neighborhood of the Morrocan ‘mafia’ juxtaposed to the very poor neighbor neighborhood in Medina.

The photos you posted of Casablanca are beautiful! And what a deal, free hotel and the opportunity to check out the city. Enjoy. Bobbie (Happy Birthday Tanea!)

  5. Lala Says:

Yes Bobbie, that was quite a deal and Moustapha was an excellent tour guide. He drove around downtown for about 2 hours. He was extremely patient and made several stops for me to shop and take photos. My French definitely helped, as they only speak Arabic and French.

In the airport, I met a group of American senior citizens who were headed to Marrakech and Rabat after Casablanca. I just love to see older folks traveling and enjoying themselves.

Yes, Casablanca is a beautiful city that rewards the visitor with an exciting concoction of European influenced ambience with the distinctive Moorish flavour of North Africa. Casablanca offers plenty to charm from the sheer spendor of the Hassan II Mosque to the narrow streets of the Medina. I liked it very much when I visited it last year.
