One last word on Darjeeling

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2005

Yesterday, when we visited the railway museum in Ghoom, I read a newspaper clipping about Mark Twain. Apparently the famous American author paid a visit to Darjeeling via the Himalayan Railway. He spoke about the incessant fog, apparently he had heard of a tourist who waited in Darjeeling 21 days for the fog to clear so he could see the Himalayas. Without luck, the man gave up on the 21st day, when he went to pay his hotel bill he noted that this was the highest thing he would ever see in the Himalayas. I am a diehard optimist, but even I don’t think the clouds are going to clear anytime soon.
