Expatriated…to Romania

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

I was pretty lousy this last year at keeping up with the blog. Our last post was with the wedding details…a year ago. A lot of things happened since then. We got married in Amiens on October 7th. It was a beautiful, unforgettable day…a true international affair with friends and family from all corners of the globe and lots of trip souvenirs included in the day. Since then we have kept up our usual pace…our first adventure as a married couple was French immigration. New immigration laws stipulated that I would have to return to the U.S. after the wedding to apply for a special marriage visa from a French consulate. That was easier than we expected, and I was back in France quickly and ready to start work. As I was sending out CVs and interviewing, Fabien also got the itch to make a professional change. December 2006 was a mad dash of interviews and I was determined to sign a contract before we left for our Christmas vacation in Florida. Fabien had several new offers at this time, but was not ready to make a final decision. During our trip to Florida, Fabien got a message from his old boss (now located in Russia)…what do you think about a new ex-pat opportunity?

“ROMANIA! No, I just got my working papers and a job in France.” My first reaction was not my usual enthusiastic self, but after thinking it over, we decided to do it. The East was calling us; we both missed the “anything is possible” feeling in Prague and Paris (despite being the most beautiful city in the world) is bloody expensive and exhausting.

So, the first part of 2007, I worked for a business English school in Paris. I had some great students and met some cool teachers…as always with teaching, I think I learned as much from them as they did for me. At the same time, we were preparing for our future in Bucharest. Fabien came in May (on crutches, after surgery to repair his Achilles tendon) and I stayed in Paris, working and getting our stuff packed up. Fabien flew back to France for 5 days to help me with the move, and we arrived in Bucharest together on July 26th, ready to continue this crazy adventure.
