Regarding accomodation you can find everything in Paris. From 20 euro dorm beds to 300 euro/night 5-star hotels. I’m going to give a few recommendations on the cheaper side, but if you’ve recently won the lottery or hit it big in the stock market, be my guest, go crazy!
Fabien and I live in a nice, well-positioned area of Paris, near Place des Ternes. From our apartment, we are a 10-15 minute walk to the Arc de Triomphe and Champs-Elysées, a short metro ride to the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Opera. I can definitely recommend our neighborhood for its location and the numerous supermarkets, outdoor markets, restaurants, cafés and shopping. The only real drawback is that the hotels are markedly more expensive than hotels of the same quality in other areas of Paris. (For example, a two-star hotel here runs around 100 euros for a double, while a 1-star is around 60 euros.)
Here are some recommendations in the 17eme arrondissment walking distance from our place and many Paris attractions:

This website is quite useful for finding hotels in Paris at all budgets. It allows you to choose the area of town you want to stay in; you can also choose the budget by indicating the number of stars (one is the cheapest.)

Other nice areas of Paris to stay in: the area around Opera, Montmartre (the famous Bohemian quarter), and the Latin Quarter
Another good option for cheap accomodation is Formule 1, by Accor hotels. They are usually located at end of the metro lines, so the disadvantage is that you’ll have to take the metro a good distance to see the sites of Paris. They offer more luxurious hotels in better locations as well. Check the web-site for their rates and specials.
