Lago-Lake Titicaca Peru & Bolivia

Eng: Titicaca in Peru, first stop was Puno, from where we took a tour out onto the lake to visit some of the Islands. Here’s a view of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world at some 3800m above sea level!

TIticaca View 1

Eng : Our first stop was at the amazing floating Uros Islands. These islands are made up of huge clumps of reed roots tied together and covered with reeds. The locals explained that if some members of one island don´t get along with others on the same island they just cut off part of the island so they float off on their own island!!!! Imagine you could do that at home if you didn´t get along with your neighbours… The reed boats are cool, they can hold up to 30 people and using tradiional methods they usually last about 6 months.

Eng: Next stop was Amantaní Island, further out into the lake, some 3 hours from Puno by boat. Here we stayed with a local family, our hosts were Mami Juana and Papi Saturnino and their little grand daughter Kilia. We got the chance to visit a local wedding too, everybody ejoying themselves, lots of dancing too. We also got to dress up as the locals that night wich was fun!

Eng: The next day we said goodbye to our hosts on Amantaní and boarded the boat for Taquile Island about a 30 minute boat ride from Amantaní.

Titicaca – Bolivia

Eng: After our trip to the Peruvian islands on Lake Titicaca we returnd to Puno and headed by bus to the Bolivian border and on to the small town of Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The most impressive thing here was the amazing sunsets every evening!

Copacabana Sunset

Eng: From Copacabana we went on a day trip out onto the lake to visit the Island of the Sun ¨Isla Del Sol¨, where legend has it the Inca civilisation was born. Here we visited some of the Inca ruins and then went on a tough hike from the northern end to the southern part, tough not because of the terrain, but because most of ithe trail was above 4,000m, where the air is pretty thin!!!! Some amazing views along the way, we even spotted our possible future summer home, with views of the mighty Andes in the background, wouldn´t it be great to wake up to those views every day, hahaha!!!! Oh and a curious sheep grazing away.

Eng: Well that´s it for now, next stop La Paz, highest capital in the world, from where we took a trip down to the Amazonia lowlands, beginnings of the mighty Amazon basin. So we´ve got lots more to show!!!!

Wow guys, looks great. Love the whole float off on an island concept – would certainly be handy given the political situation on this island!!
Sounds like you are really taking the whole travel thing seriously, staying with local families – that wedding must have been great craic. Ruairi and I and Owen (he of multiple cruise crash fame) and his girlf Aileen are off to Amsterdam this weekend, staying with the bould Al, who knows what madness lies ahead!
Hoping to get a go on Al’s new boat!
    Keep it country!

    Howdy Mairead,
    long time no read!!!
Mmm… not sure too many people would like that idea of cutting off part of Ireland… Yea, Titicaca and the islands are great, as cool staying with the locals, really getting used to the coca leaves 😉 really makes a difference at these altitudes, gonna miss it when we head back into Argentina. Say hi to all in the ´Dam, and if you can´t be good, be careful!!!!! Al´s got a new boat???? Can´t wait to have a go ourselves!!! Give him a big hug from us in Bolivia, and make sure he checks out the blog!

    Hugs bolivianitos!

    Hey Mairead,
Can you ask Byrne when ‘Hotel Al’ reopened for me? Is it under new managemet? Last bloke who was running the place was a bit curt with the guests and always falling around drunk :).

    Besos,
    J&Q

    Hi Antoinette,

that was Mami Juana, she didn’t smile much, maybe that’s because of the bitter cold and harsh climate they have up here! About to send a few things by post today, if the post office is open, there was a strike the last few days, and tomorrow is the national holiday, so we’ll see, need to make some space in our backpacks!
We’re off to the Uyuni Salt flats tomorrow, supposed to be really cold at night -15’C or colder, brrrrr…..
    Give hugs to everyone!!!
    Luv,

    Hello everybody….!!
Our last night in Bolivia, we are sad to leave this beautiful country, with so many different landscapes and so much to see… and soooo soooo cheap..!!!! In Salta we will upload pics so we can show you how beautiful it is.
We hoope we can come back to continue exploring this place.
We wil go to Salta ( Argentina ) tomorrow, at the moment we are in a village called Villazon, on the border with Argentina, today we were walking on the border between the 2 countries.
    Talk to yous soon…!!

    Hola chicos, tenemos noticias noticiosas…

Couldn’t leave any comments for the last few days, seem to be rearranging their pages and this anti-spam thing wasn’t appearing…
    But now Im back…..

And I’ll explain to you the meaning of the phrase ‘AVVVVIIIITTTT’ for those who aren’t familiar with the bit of English coloqualisum…

    The correct dictionary definition is…

Avitttt is coloqual English slang for ‘I say, you can do it ole chappy’.

Usually referring to one male participant encouraging another male participant to over endulge in some excessive consumption of alcohol or lude behaviour with a member of the opposite s*x.
Usually resulting in said party disgorging the contents of their stomach on the premises or any nearby female participants.

    The usual reply to AVVVVIITTTTT is;
    ‘YEAAHHHHHH, Go on my Sonnnnnn!!!’
    translated:’yes, mount my son’

This kind of activity is usually found in scenic spots such as Ibiza or Lanzigrotty usually in the vicinity of a bar or a swimming pool.

This kind of behaviour functions best when their are a large number of ‘lads’.
One male by himself saying avit to a large group of females is not a pretty sight and is not to be encouraged.

ps. Al’s friend Joe (thats a girl, and she’s English and she has a really croaky deep voice) started saying it on the Shannon cruise and it stuck.
We met her in Amsterdam there on the weekend while visiting Al. She’s still ‘aving it.
Were out on his speed boat the lot of us, great fun drinking beer and wine in the sun driving under the bridge out the Amstel to the country side.
Hanging out in a rock bar playing pool and smoking some scooby doos.

But as Ritchie says, the phrase Avit does wear thin after a while…

    But its still Wickkkkkeddddddd….

    Ruari,

cheers, for that explanation, guess we’ve been out of the English speaking world for too long, hey, when we get back you’ll proobably all be speaking some wierd unrecognisable form of the language, and we’ll probably sound like Shakespearean characters!!!!

Lanzagrotty, I like it, sums up those resorts to a tee!!!! (Apologies to any Lanzaroteños if they’re reading!).

Mmm Amsterdam, can’t wait to visit, hey tel Al we’ll be over there like a hot snot as soon as we get the funds when we get back!!!! Boating along the countryside sounds like a great way to get away from it all!

Don’t know any witty trendy English phrases, been a while since I spoke English, about 3 1/2 months now, so ‘hasta la victoria siempre!’ as aul Che used to say (just reading his diary from the revolution he started in Bolivia in 1967)!

Gotta put up some more pics soon, got lots of stuff to show you guys! Bolivia really!!!!

    Take care,
    James & Cristina
