Giant Pandas in Shaanxi

We had the chance to visit some Giant Pandas in a Qinling Animal Rescue Centre a couple of hours from Xi’an in central China.
The Giant Panda is an endangered animal, there are currently only 1500 Giant Pandas in China, their native country. As they are solitary animals they tend to have a very low reproduction rate, with females only able to get pregnant 3-4 weeks in Spring every year. We had the rare chance to see a baby Panda – Xin Xin which was born last August, and is still learning to walk, she spends all the time with her mother, Xue Xue, as she teaches her how to eat bamboo and it learns how to walk, usualy able to walk by 7months! We also met Yang Yang, who is 2 years old, and was also born at this centre in the Qinling Mountains he was so friendly, even got to hold his hand and Quene gave him a back massage, which he really enjoyed!!!!

Yang Yang at play:

I am a Panda beard too.. a red panda ..

    Lilsis (which one?)
There’s one Panda Centre in Chengdu (another province) where you can actually hug the panda (for about 40 Euro), the money goes to help the conservation centre for the pandas. But yea, they’re sooooo cute, and Yang Yang was really friendly!!!
Pity there’s not so many left…

    Richie,
Will be in NZ around then, so will let you know around Xmas, when we have to reschedule flights for south america, we might need to change flights for NZ too if we go to see U2. Send us a mail with details, where etc. james_murphy@hotmail.com

Off to Hong Kong by overnight train this evening.
    Another ‘fun’ experience, I bet!

    Bye for now!

When Xue Xue gave birth to Xin, Xue Xue actually gave birth to twins. The seond was a boy Xiao XIng which the mother rejected. The Shaanxi Animal Center took the rejected baby panda and was going to try and raise him. When you were there, did you hear anything about what happened to the baby boy? Did he survive or not? Is there a website that tells any of this? This happened back in August 2005 and I’ve tried to find information since but have been unable to. Thank you for anything you can email me on. Don’t leave it on your blog because I may never find it again. I found it only through a google search and not sure I could repeat it.
