5 de Mayo,

6 de Junio,

7 de Julio: San Fermin!!!!

A Pamplona hemos de ir…

So the song goes, 7 of July we’re off to Pamplona, to celebrate San Fermin!

San Fermin is the fiesta of the bull running through the streets of Pamplona/Iruña (in Euskera or Basque), capital of Navarra/Naffaroa autonomous community. Made famous internationally by the North American writer Ernest Hemmingway, who was a frequent visitor to the fiestas, the Pamploneses, along with the rest of Spain have been enjoying these fiestas for centuries. We met up with Jon and his family who dropped in from Bilbao to celebrate with us, we had a great time!!!

The fiesta officially starts at midday on the 6th with the Txupinazo, the opening ceremony where a rocket is launched from the balcony of the town hall, for the 7 mornings following, the main event of the bull running through the streets begins at 8am, where “mozos” run in front of the bulls along the 800m route through the old town and then into the bull ring, where later the bull fighting occurs.

For the rest of the day and nights throughout this weeklong fiesta the streets are jam-packed with revellers, “mozos” dressed in white with their red scarves and belts, these are the guys who run in front of the bulls each morning, but nowadays everybody dresses up in white and red, it has become the uniform of everyone in Pamoplona for the fiestas! Many a marching band that wind their way through the streets surrounded by party goers too!

In the morning after the bull run,La Comparsa parade happens, where giants stroll and dance through the streets…

Finally the Kuxumuxu bulls, made famous by the Kuxumuxu t-shirt company, this year the bulls got their own balcony so they could have a great view of the bull run and festivities down below at street level!

Well that’s it for now, lots more to come from Spain!

Well we’re finally home! Almost, well Quene is but a couple thousand miles more to go until the trip is officially over So we’re still travelling, and keeping the blog alive!

Howdy again from Uruguay!

This time from Cabo Polonio, about 5 hoursby bus (and 4×4 truck to get through the dunes) , east of Montevideo, on the way to the Brazilian border. This place has got to be one of the best beach holidays ever! If you like to chill out, and let all your worries float away, spend the days drifting among the sand dunes, and swimming into the clear blue sea, or strolling through the woods, then eating (and cooking) by candle light in the evening after watching amazing sunsets over the dunes, this is the place for you!

Every St. Patrick’s Day we’ve celebrated has been a cracker, so we made sure Paddy’s Day in BA would be no different!.
We had heard that they like to celebrate here, so we decided to join in, we got face paints, wigs and funny hats - all Irish colours of course!

Last year we should have been watching U2 play live in Auckland, but due to a last minute cancellation, we ended up in the Irish Bars, doing what most people do when celebrating Paddy’s Day, take a wild guess at what that might be…mmm…! And this year was no different, with plenty of Irish Bars dotted around the Retiro part of downtown BA! (more…)

ENG: Welcome to the Colón Theatre (that’s Colón as in Columbus, not a body part ) One of Buenos Aires’ jewels, andone of the world’s great Opera Houses. It was inaugurated in 1908 after 20 years of construction! And next year will celebrate its centenary. Right now you can’t go inside as it’s being refurbished, but Quene was lucky enough to enroll in a theatrical set-design course, taught in the Theatre’s Theatrical Institute.

ENG: So as not to bore you too much (you were probably thinking the next post was going to be form our local supermarket!!!) Well we took the opportunity to take a trip out of Buenos Aires and Argentina, crossing the River Plate, we added another country to the list, Uruguay, where we visited Colonia del Sacramento for weekend away! In less than an hour away by catamaran you are whisked away from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires to the small fortress town of Colonia, apparently the oldest town in Uruguay.

Thanks for staying with us, we ran out of space for photos on the blog. Sorted that out (had to reduce the size of the photos, but you’ll still get the idea!!!)

ENG: Well another year, and another country to spend New Years!
A cool photo, very apt as we are still on our way round the world, the journey hasn’t ended just yet!
