Last post from Australia - NSW Coast & Sydney

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

Well everyone, this is our last post from Australia :(

Just a few more photos from the remainder of the 3700km drive from Cairns to Sydney!

Great view of a storm coming towards land, this was taken just south of Byron Bay, apparently it rains a lot in the area, trust our luck!!!

 SeaStorm

Finally a couple of photos of our home for the 3 1/2 weeks on the road!

Campervan1 Campervan 2

We visited Port Stewart staying in Nelson Bay, overlooking the natural harbour that is home to many very friendly wild bottle-nosed dolphins. We saw a few different ‘pods’ wth up to 20 dolphins in each pod. In the nursery pods there are young dolphins with adult females teaching them the skills to survive. We saw a few younger ones, they’re the most inquisitive and kept hopping out of the water to take a look at us, kinda funny, us watching them watching us…In the middle photo you can see the baby dolphin swimmnig to the right, aahhhhhh……

Dolphins2  Dolphins and baby  Dolphins 1

Nelson Bay also has some sand dunes, here we saw a jeep in a bit of trouble by the looks of things, but this photo shows the sheer size of the dunes!

 Stranded_Jeep

And these photos show us on the sand dunes doing some surfing of a different type!

James Sand Surfing Quene Sand Surfing Dudes Sand Surfboards

After Nelson Bay we headed inland to check out some of the wine on offer at the famous Hunter Valley, home to a few famous vineyards and a few not so famous ones! Ths photo is from Lindeman’s vinyward, probably one of the more well known, Rosemount and Tyrrels are also nearby.

Ah.. tambien tienen aceitunas..

Hunter Valley - Lindemans

Then back to Sydney, we drove over the Harbour Bridge, just for the fun!!!

On the Bridge

Another nice spot in Sydney, Watsons Bay on the sheltered side of the harbour, big change from Bondi, nice and tranquil, with great views of the city.

Sydney from Watsons Bay

Last night in Sydney, with Mel we met up with my cousin Nadine and her husband John for a farewell dinner. Just around the corner on Crcular Quay there was this great UN sponsored exhibition of painted bears from all different countries. Here’s us with the Irish one!

 Gang and Irsh Bear

Finally from us both, thanks a lot for visiting, viewing and leaving comments! We really appreciate that you guys want to share in our trip! So here’s lots of love going out to you all! Next stop New Zealand!!!!!

Bears on Circular Quay

Hugs and kisses to all!

Special Surfing (Noosa,Coolangatta, Byron Bay)

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

G’Day from the Sunshine Coast (north of Brisbane), Gold Coast (South of Brisbane) and Byron Bay (Northern N.S.W Coast!!!) all great swimming and surfing beaches, no jellyfish, nor crocodiles in the sea now that we’re officially out of the tropics, having passed south of the Tropic of Capricorn! 1st time for James to surf in the Pacific Ocean, in Noosa! Just give me a few more lessons and I’ll be world class material!

Just south of the Sunshine Coast, and a bit inland are the Glass House Mountains, forming part of the local Aborigins Dreaming - Creation of the World mythology.

James gets up a monster’s nose outside the wax museum at Surfers Paradise!

IMG_4863.jpg

From Coolangatta you have a great view accross the bay to Surfers’ Paradise, no more one story houses here! This spot is the most high rise of all the coast.

IMG_4868.jpg

Just 5 minutes inside the campsite and Quene’s scoring hoops! Been a while, but she can still show off the perfect technique!

1IMG_4881.jpg 3IMG_4881 (2).jpg

James after a few surfing lessons, really he’s a born natural!!! Ah no this is the world championship tour at Coolangatta, southern Gold Coast!

IMG_4887.jpg  IMG_4941.jpg

Lots of surfer chicks too strutting down the beach, not sure if this girl is participating in the world championships, who knows…?

IMG_4924.jpg

At the right spot at the right time, we cought Kelly Slater (USA) world #1 (left) and Mick Fanning (AUS) #2 (right) battle it out on the waves, some awesome surfing to be seen!

IMG_4937.jpg IMG_4951.jpg

These events attract big crowds, it’s an awesome sight. We caught the 1st round of the event, 2 weeks left to decide the winner, but you can find out on http://www.quiksilver.com!

IMG_4942.jpg IMG_4956.jpg

Byron Bay, accross the border in New South Wales, about 80km south of Coolangatta. A big hippie town, lots of surfers and backpackers make this place really chilled out! Not too mention the great surf and amazing beaches!

IMG_4982.jpg IMG_4991.jpg

Byron Head just at the tip of Byron Bay is Australia’s most eastern point. The light house was built in 1901, and shines 48km out to sea at night time! Looks a bit like Ireland, right?

IMG_4960.jpg
