Koalas and kangaroos

Ahhhhhh isn’t he soooooo cute!!!!!!!! I wanna take one home!
Que boniiiiiiiiiiito!!!!!!!! Quiero llevarme uno!

We visited the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary on the outskirts of Brisbane.
Home to some 130 or so Koala bears, lots of kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, emus, dingos, snakes and lizards, as well as parrots and bats and lots of other native wildlife!

We got a chance to hold a koala…. aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh:
Tuvimos la occasion de abrazar a un koala…aaaaaaaahhhhh:

There were lots of kangaroos in a field, and you can feed them, so in we went armed with bagloads of kangaroo feed, they loved it, and we did too, they way they look at you, they’re just as cute as the koalas!

The whole gang with the kangurus:
Todo nosotros netidos con los kangurus:

A sleepy kangaroo, it was pretty hot!!!
Un kanguru dormido, hizo mucho calor!!!

Ahh and this is the South Bank beach in Brisbane city centre, cool or what, and it’s free in too, you think they’d put something like that in the middle of O’Connell St in Dublin???

    To QUENE:

    Alrite Lads!
    Photos are beautiful!
Just looking at the blue skies makes me want to pack my bags right now!
But I can’t complain as I have just enjoyed 10 days in the sun and will soon be enjoying another 10 if flights to Jakarta and Singapore come through for me before the Chinese New Year (at the end of January).
We had close-to-end-of-term tests here in December and right now we are just finishing off 4 days of end-of-term exams! They really work the students here! You wanna see the homework that the students had over the Christmas and New Year holidays – tonnes (though half the buggers didn’t do it)!!
Anyway as a result I haven’t had much time to show the kids the pics or talk about your travels! Though I know a few still check the site in their spare time. Though only Hei (Alan) has been brave enough to keep posting comments; short though they are!
We did have a Christmas party before we broke in December! I gave out the postcards as Christmas gifts from J&C, don’t worry I made up the shortage with some small gifts of my own! We also had a look at pics on your site briefly at that time.
We’ll post some group comments later when we get a chance!
In the meantime keep on enjoying your travels. Sure looks like you are! And let me know when you are taking your next diving trip – you never know we could hook up together for that! Me, I’m gonna try to dive again as soon as possible. Probably Chinese New Year?
    That’s all lads….

Hi Everyone, we’re here in Manly, just outside Sydney visiting my cousin Nadine and her family, just been to the beach, nice spot indeed!!!

    Bea,

    Calenco,
Leon says Hi, along with Jack and Aaron, Nadine’s little boys, they’re all the best of friends and having a great time! Janis and Leon fly back tonight, really been great having them here, and they really dont want to go back!!!!!

    Hi Al,
glad you got around to viewing (and posting a comment!) We’re having a ball! Only 9 months left 🙁 We get back to Dublin in October this year. Just hope time doesn’t fly too fast!

    Hei,
glad you like the Koalas and Kangaroos!!!! Say hi to all your class mates from us in Australia!

    Ruari,
those Koalas are a protected species, so no casseroles for us, but I’ve heard kangaroo meat is tasty!

    Hi Larry,
from your previous post sounds like you had a great time in Thailand! And your upcoming trip sounds good too! Hope all the guys did well in their exams. Our next diving trip is goping to be in the Great Barrier Reef around early February, gotta be done, so if you feel like popping over, I’m sure it’ll be a great dive trip! Enjoy the Chinese New Year, what date does that fall? Might try and keep an eye out for some celebrations here!

Take it easy folks and keep up with the posts!

My camera is Canon Powershot S215 is big and heavy , but is not letting me down , it takes all sorts of photographs no matter how poor the light is … in Pingyao (China) the light was to strong and the photos with the girls in the cafe had to much light.. but apart for this is great… is goes with me wherever I go , even mad nights..

    To janis and Leon ,
I hope you had a nice flight , we miss yous already…

Larry we are planning the other half of the trip.. I feel sad already because we are having such a great time , that we don;t want to come back to “normal life” .
We will let you know when we are going to be .. would like to be in Sydney for the Chinese New Year celebrations (as the chinese comunity here is massive)
But then we will be running out of time for the East coast ( from Cairns back to Sydney at the end of Feb.) Also White Stripes and Franz Ferdinand are playing here the 26 … but we will be in Darwin .. 🙁 … we can’t have it all….

Talk to yous in a while , we have to find Trailfinders here in the city to change our flights for the Australia, New Zealand and South America part of the trip..

    Sol,

One of the teachers just tried to explain the Chinese calendar to me and traditions associated with the Chinese New Year – it’s complicated!

Basically, New Year’s Day has a similar feel to Christmas as we know it – a family occasion. They even buy toys for the kids! It is also a day for married couples to give red packets to the young ones. They put money in the red packets – but apparently not a lot of money! I was happy to hear that my boss will probably give me a red packet, but not so happy when I heard that it will be ‘filled’ with either 10 or 20HK$ (1 or 2 euro)!

They’re probably won’t be a countdown as we know it, though the teacher did say that younger people do ‘go out’ on New Year’s Eve. However ‘going out’ is more likely to mean a walk-in-the-park or perhaps a Karaoke night where they’ll sing songs with friends in a booth; not western-style getting hammered on beers and sambuka shots and first-one-pist is on the mike! This year there is no December 30th in the Chinese calendar, so New Year’s Eve is Decenber 29th! Here’s a run-down on what happens over the course of the New Year celebrations (our calendar dates are in brackets):

December 28 (Jan-27) – literally ‘Clean The House’ Day
    December 29 (Jan-28) – New Year’s Eve
January 1 (Jan-29) – New Year’s Day (everybody goes to a flower market apparently, with family)
January 3 (Jan-31) – loosely ‘Do Not Visit Your Family Day’ becasue you will fall out

That’s what I got from our conversation! Hope it helps.
    Errors and Omissions Expected!

  18. Larry 13 January 2006 at 6:41 am #

    Correction:

December 29 (Jan-28) – New Year’s Eve (everybody goes to a flower market with family)

January 1 (Jan-29) – New Year’s Day (red packet day and family dinner)

  19. Quene & James 14 January 2006 at 7:42 am #

    Larry ,

Thanks for the explanation …I will love to be in Sydney for the Chinese new year but we will delay the whole trip around Oz..
There is a book that I am eating now , call Mao’s last dancer.. is beautiful and talks about chinese traditions and all… and how a peasant kid survived in a poor family in the 50’s in a small town in China (a bit like Angela’s ashes but without the alcoholic father)
If you have the chance read it ..
    Talk to you soon

    Hello Bigbro + Ann..
The campervan was $2000 for 4 weeks .. + petrol.. around $300 .. we were calculating and is as expensive as travelling on the bus and then sleeping in hostals .. but with this you are free to come and go and you don’t need to unpack your bags and carry the bags everysingle day..
It has fridge, sink and lots of space , cooker (you can save a bit if you cook) ..

I recomend you should check prices ..it will be beautiful from Seattle to Vancouver..I hope you can post a comment form there so we have more flags in the comments .. 🙂
Say hello to the rest of the family… !!

    See yas!
