Wayne’s World, etc.

ww-balcony ww-bldg

Saturday 2/18/06 we moved into Wayne’s penthouse apartment. It’s one of 3 on the 3rd floor of a French colonial building on Street 13, across from the main post office. Very close to Wat Phnom. We’ve been exploring the neighborhood on foot and watching the world go by from the large windows that look down on St. 13.

Phnom Penh and environs

Cardamom Walkabout/Moto

Our gracious friends at Conservation International (CI) provided all logistical support, however we lacked the Thai cooking tins that are required camping gear, so we stopped at the Thai military market on the outskirts of Phnom Penh for our compact and versatile green metal boxes. Apparently the market is also a source of old contraband that still floats around this country. Ak 47 or grenade launcher. This is the spot. The government is cracking down on this stuff now, as it doesn’t promote a tourist-friendly atmosphere.

We stopped for lunch in a small village and ate at a restaurant new to Wayne, where our ‘table’ was set up under a nipa roofed platform where we sat, barefoot, looking at a little river. Lunch was rice, a soup and a meat and vegetable dish, delicately seasoned and ready in less than 5 minutes. It was a wonderful surprise to be in such a dusty little town and get treated to a tasty meal. Especially when the first place we tried to get lunch just closed its kitchen.

Kaeng Krachan NP

February 13th, 2006

[It is wonderful reading your comments, good friends. Thank you.]
On our way to the largest park in Thailand, we stopped in Ban Pak Thale to find the spoon-billed sandpiper. Once again we were trudging on mud dikes between salt pond shallows. Many shorebirds were feeding in the area so it was a matter of looking at everything that might be THE sandpiper. Dow, Sam’s driver, was a big help in getting us to the right area and he was spared the hot sun and went off in search of lunch. After spotting the bird we walked around some more and saw a couple more of the sbsps and I tried taking photos of them, to no avail, alas. By the time we to to KKNP, it was late afternoon.

Headquarters Campground 1/28

The deal is to buy your entrance fee and camping permits a day ahead. We weren’t sure where we wanted to be, so we paid for 2 nights at Ban Krang and one at the top, Panoen Thung. They also offer you a 1400 Baht/day pick-up to take you up to the campgrounds, which we declined. Sam had sussed it out and said we could probably share a ride up there with other campers, so we decided to try that.

Our first experience camping in Thailand was an eye-opener. Especially for me, as I forgot my earplugs. We’re used to camping in designated spots and all the usual regulations that campgrounds have, so when we got there and saw tents around the lake (there is a dam/reservoir near the headquarters), we picked a spot along the lake, not too close to the next guy. Then we went off in search of some food; we took a walk back toward the resorts, about half a mile towards the dam. When we returned the space we put between us and the other tents were taken up by more tents. It turned out that tents kept springing up all night and by morning, it looked like a different campground. The worst of it was being woken up at 4:30 by the sound of tents being taken down!

On the outskirts of Bangkok

January 26th, 2006

(I’m at the mercy of a wireless internet connection that I’ve found while sitting on Sam’s veranda. So if this does not get posted right away, it’s beyond my control at this point.)

At six in the morning, it’s still dark as night. The temperature is a pleasant 78 degrees and there is a very slight cool stirring of air.. Yesterday there was a breeze and it was cool enough to force a light sweater on me. Howie didn’t need one, though. It’s Friday; we arrived a little after noon on Tuesday. Our body clocks have adjusted enough that today I decided to stay awake when 5:30 a.m. arrived. We leave for Kaeng Krachen this morning and I need to get this out.

Samut Sakorn (Wednesday, 25 January 2006). This was our first birding excursion of the trip. Dao, Sam’s driver helped us find Mr. Tee, who led us to the salt pans that had quite a number of stints, plovers and gulls. But we did not find the spoon-billed sandpiper, our main objective. We had other birds and a lifer or two for Howie and we will look for the sbsp at another location on Friday.
