Sundays in Mexico

Mexico Sunday

Sundays are my favorite days in Mexico. Sundays are all about family, futbol, absolutely and completely forgetting about work, and copious amounts of good food.

Mexico City is hustle and bustle from Monday to Saturday…traffic, noise, and go go go, but on Sunday, you can hear a pin drop. Chapultepec Park is a common family spot, as are futbol matches at Estadio Azteca, and Sunday brunches, at home or up at the city lake in the park.

My rather large set of Mexican in-laws often celebrates family birthdays on Sundays (no time during the week), which makes Sundays very festive affairs, full of food, singing, and piñatas.

Sunday is a day I enjoy strolling around Mexico City, often to take pictures. Over on the right column of my blog, there are several pages of photos I’ve taken over the years.

A little later, after a fine Sunday afternoon…

I stopped over at my mother-in-law’s home – the central gathering point for all family affairs – for the 49th birthday party of my sister-in-law. No piñata this time, and being a Sunday, the family lazed about as usual, or talked politics, or picked apart the thick Sunday paper.

Having stuffed myself with chilaquiles, bisteces, and cake, I went downtown for a stroll. El Palacio de las Bellas Artes is one of my favorite spots, with great architecture, lots of Sunday amble-abouts, and kids.

Chinatown, a single city block in Mexico City, is not too far away. I caught a glimpse of some decorations as I passed by and recalled that Chinese New Year is coming up.

2007 is the Year of the Pig, so street vendors in China town are hawking pig-like items.

Dolores Avenue is where China town is located…very small compared to Chinatowns in Toronto, San Francisco, or Vancouver.
