More details of Scotland and The Highlands and the Orkney Islands
We really enjoyed the tour. If youdo go, definitely ask for Seamus (aka James). He’s quite an interesting guy, with hilarious stories. Other things we saw and did on the tour (which we recommend, as we upgraded to the 7 day tour instead of the 4 day tour at the last minute):
- Learned about the history of Scotland, and its fierce people who had to continually fight of the British.
- Visited the Grave of Rob Roy
- Visited and saw plenty of neat castles and Palaces (Linlithgow, Stirling, and many others)
- Learned about the Giants who formed the Cuillin Mountains (Skyeha and Cuillin) and the Brunies, who are short little people living underground in pyramid shaped mounds. We also visited one of their villages complete with a wicked little castle (natural formations of wee trees and hills - pretty erie and cool)
- Experienced torrential rain and gale force winds - i.e. not good weather in the highlands. Hence we were soaking wet 1/2 the time - like typical Scottish
- Learned how to play Killyball and S***head.
- Ate fresh salmon, and also learned how to cook and eat the skins.
- Saw more sheep than you can shake a stick at. Well you could, but your arm would get so tired, it would fall off.
- Played frisbee on the beach, and lured ducks onto the bus (which then pooed all over the place). We also caught a few of them by hand.
- Saw seals and porpoises on the ferry to Orkney
- saw an Italian Chapel on Orkney built by WWII POWs
- Saw massive coos on Orkney, as well as 5000 year old skulls, and giant neolithic (new stone-age) rings, older than Stonehenge.
- Waded into Loch Ness.
- Saw Hairy Coos - They have big horns and are really hairy.
- Ate the best fish and chips in the UK
- Got locked out of the haunted castle at night. Then we had to bushwack to get back into the castle.
- Got locked out of our van and had to break in the drivers side window to get the keys out…who locked the door with the keys in the ignition?? (Not us!)
(There’s probably more which we’ll add as we remember them)
