Edinburgh, the Scottish Highlands, Isle of Skye and Orkney

Well since it’s been awhile since we last posted anything itshould be a long one. Unfortunately we only have 20 minutes of internet time so it might need to be condensed slightly.

So here goes…From Glasgow we took a bus to Edinburgh. On our first day there we went for a free walking tour to get the lay of the city and learn some of it’s history. Then on Wednesday we hopped on a 16 seat tour bus, with 5 people (One Aussie, One Kiwi and another Canuck) on it, for a 7 day tour of the highlands, the Isle of Skye and Orkney with www.wild-in-scotland.com (check the website if you want to learn more). Despite the rainy, cold and windy weather on most days we had a great time. Our Scottish bus driver/tour guide had a great personality and sense of humour, and he took on us many hikes to share stories of the history and legends of Scotland. Some of the highlights were going out on a very rickity fishing boat to go trawling for scallops, which we got to eat right on the boat, both raw and cooked with garlic and butter. We also got to see lots of different types of starfish that we brought up with the scallops. We hiked out to the Cuillin Mountains and heard a great story as to how they were formed. We went to see 5,000 year old neolithic stone circles (like Stonehenge but older), neolithic villages and tombs at Scara Brae and Tomb of the Eagles which was neat. Playing a newly learned card game in the small local pub in Orkney. We got to stay in a “haunted” castle on our last night of the tour which was pretty impressive too. The last day we stopped at Culloden Battlefield which was very sad after hearing the story behind the battle. I think we both learned alot about Scotland’s troubled history. All in all it was a great tour!

Sorry for the very short condensed version but internet time is short!

Soon to come…update on our visit to Leeds, and our buss/ferry ride to Ireland.
