Lounging In Pärnu

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Tere Eestis!

We have been here in Pärnu the past few days, enjoying the rain and overcast weather. Not really great for going to the beach as we have found out. Sarah did mention though ‘Beer is a good rainy day activity.’

Despite the weather, we’ve both been spending lots of time visiting with Eero’s vanaema (grandmother) and tädi (aunt). It’s been very nice and we’ve been eating delicious home cooked meals. Life as travelers is really rough, I guess. We also went and saw an orchestral performance at the Pärnu Konserdimaja (Concert hall) which featured some excellent music.

We are staying in Pärnu until Thursday and then moving on to other parts of Eesti. We’re still in the process of figuring out where in Eesti we’re headed to next, but it looks like Lääne-Eesti (western Estonia) or Tartu-Võru area. We have also just picked up a cell-phone and can now be reached at 567-25-711. The country code for Eesti is 372, I believe. So now you can reach out and touch us! ewww.

Bussing to Eesti

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Our first update from on the road. Sarah and I flew over to Frankfurt from Toronto. It was a rather uneventful flight, but it was full and did include the Czech Republic under 20 football team that just finished 2nd in the Under-20 World cup in Canada. We arrived in Frankfurt and breezed through customs. Trying to figure out the train station machines to buy a ticket to get to the downtown train station was a bit more difficult, but we figured it out eventually.

We arrived at our Hostel at 9, and dropped off our bags and wandered around the town. It was a rather cool day and it did rain a fair bit, which we managed to avoid by window shopping in giant malls and loitering in coffee shops. Our room was ready at 14:00, where we tried to catch up on  sleep for a couple hours. We then went and found some dinner and walked around the other side of the Main river in Frankfurt. Sarah also smuggled her snitzel out of the restaurant in her backpack, which was kind of funny. It´s a nice town, and the weather cleared up in the evening. They had a carnival on the river, where they had these slides for kids, where they were put into a tupperware container and slid down a conveyer belt, kind of like they have in ontario beer stores. Quite hilarious actually, and not something you’d expect to see as a kids ride.

The next morning we got on a bus in Frankfurt. The bus was a double decker coach bus, but the air conditioning stopped working after an hour. We ended up stopping in the town of Kessel while it got fixed, which was nice, because the bus had turned into a sauna when it wasn’t working. We then bused through to Berlin in the evening. From there we went east through Poland overnight, and then north through Lithuania, Latvia, and Finally into Pärnu in Eesti, arriving about 1/2 an hour early. We then went to visit Eero’s grandmother and are staying in a nice little apartment a few blocks off the beach.
