Why Costa Rica?

Many people have asked us why we chose Costa Rica over the other places we were considering. We thought about Eastern Europe for a while, but knew we only had about 10 days; I wanted to spend at least 2 weeks traveling Eastern Europe, so that was out. We thought about Australia. Greece. Italy. Hawaii. Jamaica. Aruba. They were either too far, too expensive, or too common. We wanted something different.

At the time, I was a Customer Service Manager at Bank of America outside of DC. One of my clients was from Costa Rica, and his wife raved about how much she loved the country and how amazing the people are. When I mentioned we were trying to figure out where to go on vacation, she said that I should look into it and really consider it. So I did. And we did.

I started reading messages on Frommers.com, then moved on to Fodors, Lonely Planet, Trip Advisor, and doing google searches. The combination of adventure activities, ecotourism, and beautiful beaches was really appealing. The relatively short flight, a small 1-hour time difference, and low expense cost (food, drink, accomodations, buses, etc) sealed the deal.

I looked for a good deal on airline tickets for a few months. Taca.com had some great prices, as did Airfare.com. I went with Airfare.com when prices started creeping up on Taca. Airfare.com had a couple of bad reviews, but we had no problems with them whatsoever. The price was cheaper on their site than it was on US Air’s website by at least $100 per ticket. We bought both tickets for just around $1100 including taxes and fees. I saw fares as low as $250 for last minute travel and as high as $800+.

My husband made fun of me all the time because I did so much research. I really feel that the research I did helped me understand alot about the country before I even set foot there. I don’t remember doing ANY research when I went to Mexico, and did very little when I went to Canada last year. I highly recommend reading as much as you can about Costa Rica…it will help you decide if it really is the right place for your vacation, and will only make you love the country more if you do decide it is the right place for you. 🙂
