Packing List – sort of

Instead of listing everything we took, I’ll include the things we took that we were happy to have. And things that weren’t really needed.

Happy to Have:
Sun hat
Insect Repellent (40% Deet)
Sunscreen w/SPF 50
Antifrizz hair stuff.
Wicking shirts and quick dry pants/shorts
2.5 gallon size ziplock bags (for wet clothes, dirty shoes, etc)
Keens (I also took TechAmphibian shoes and while they were nice for the plane, the Keens were MUCH better for light hiking, waterfalls, and beaches with a lot of coral, shells, etc)
Water camera
Travel alarm clock
Ear plugs
Duffle Bags(we used my husband’s military-issued bags). We stuffed our backpacks into the bags and were able to lock them and throw them around. We also felt more secure when using the public buses since people couldn’t just unzip a pocket and take something.
Small packets of laundry detergent
Headlamps – they are small and light. You never know when you’ll wish you had a flashlight!
Books (My recommendations: I read two fun books by the same author…J. Maarten Troost. The Sex Lives of Cannibals and Getting Stoned With Savages. Fun, witty books about his travels to the South Pacific).

Things not needed:
Anything to do with hair drying/styling. I took a combo hairdryer/styler thing and it was useless. I had my hair in a ponytail for almost the entire trip.
Avoid cotton shirts/pants if possible. Even cotton tank tops felt heavy.
Any dressy shoes. I took a pair of hiking boots, Keens, flip flops, and Tech Amphibians, and could have done without the Techs. If you aren’t doing any major hiking, Keens and flip flops are all you need.
