Day 5 Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Sunday, January 15th, 2006Day 5: Karanga Camp (13,800′) to Barafu Camp (15,200′) was a fairly easy hike. A gradual slope up for most of the way and then a steep climb up to camp.

Twenty, twenty, twenty-four hours to go…
Speaking of going, this was a typical outhouse (hopefully downwind of your tent).
The holes got smaller, the higher we got.
This was the last climb up to Barafu camp.
Kilimanjaro was always present off to the left (and straight up). We are still roughly one vertical mile from the summit. Got into Barafu at around noon – had a hot lunch and went to the tent for a nap. Got up around 6pm for a bite of dinner and then back to sleep. We split up into 2 groups for the summit climb. The first group got up around 10:15pm and started hiking at 11pm, the rest of us got up at 11:15pm and started hiking around midnight (new year’s eve!). Some of the porters had fireworks which they set off at midnight – this got the crowd fired up for the hike.
