Day 2-3 Machame Camp - Shira Camp- Barranco Camp

Day 2: Machame Camp (10,000′) to Shira Camp (12,300′). The hike today started out nice and sunny. There was a noticable decline in the vegetation as we climbed today. It didn’t really rain on us, but it got very foggy and misty. A fairly easy hike today, and we rolled into camp at around 4pm, just enough time to get in some frisbee! The sun came out again for a beautiful sunset.

Day 3: Shira Camp (12,300′) to Barranco Camp (13, 000′). Today was hard. Started nice and sunny again and then clouded up around noon. We hiked to about 14,200′ by 2pm. The porters had gone ahead and set up the cook tent and we had a hot lunch.

From here we had the option of continuing on to 15,000′ to Lava Tower (just below where those 3 americans were killed in a rockslide) before decending to camp. Myself and 8 others decided to just go on down to camp from here (14,200′ was enough aclimitization for me for the day). The downhill hike sucked! My knees were killing me - I should’ve had that second trekking pole. Walked through some landscape that was right out of Dr. Seuss.

Saw some very cool birds, and the sun came out right at sunset again. Went to bed at 8:30pm. The mountain seems close now, but….
