A Change of Plans

My trip has now been pushed back to June 3rd, so I’ll be in San Francisco until then, which of course means more local kiting and hanging out with friends in the Bay Area.  The first and second weekends this month were spent at Pismo Beach.  The weather was fantastic the first weekend - good wind and warmer water than we have in the Bay right now.  The second weekend consisted of fantastic wind and FREEZING cold water, which is quite uncomfortable when you’re body dragging in the waves (yea, I haven’t gotten brave enough to bust out the board yet in the waves…soon though!). The first weekend (& Saturday night of the second weekend) we stayed at the SeaVenture Resort in Pismo Beach.  ( http://www.seaventure.com/) The room was great, complete with hot tub on the deck which overlooked the ocean…lovely.  Upon waking, we drove south from the hotel a short ways and out onto the beach to stake out our kiting spot.  It’s best to start pretty far north as there’s a large off-roading contingent on the dunes of the southern part of the beach, so kites can’t launch/land there. When driving to Pismo from the north, you’ll pass by the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo (http://www.madonnainn.com/).  Day or night, this place is a beacon of gaudiness, and for those who like the color pink, it’s heaven!  We stayed there on Friday night the second weekend.  Stepping in to your room feels like you’ve been drugged and are now floating about in Sleeping Beauty’s nightmare….sort of.  The decor is colorful and strange, with swirling woodwork around all the entryways and rock formations protruding into the room from the walls.  Our room had a rock waterfall shower.  Let me tell you, the most satisfying shower I’ve had until this one was at Burning Man 2002.  I thought nothing could beat a “playa shower”, but this was hands down the best.
