So chilled….

OK, Isla Mujeres is officially fantastic.

This was the view as I left cancun, boo….

and this was the first road I walked down on Isla, yay!

You can see a few more photos if you click on the My Photos link to the right.

This really is the best place to start this trip. I don´t think I´ve ever felt so relaxed in my life. I´ve met so many people already and it´s only my second full day. I´m adapting to the backpacker lifestyle ok I think. It´s such a different routine to being at home, you spend your whole time thinking about whether you need to put more deet on, whether you fancy a beer, whether you´ll maybe go for a walk or have a siesta, it´s a nice life.

Yesterday was mainly spent chilling on the beach and swimming. The beach is gorgeous and not too busy. Mexican girls wander around selling sarongs, juice, hair braids, all sorts. I saw some love birds (well I think they were, they were green and there was two of them sat close together), one of the girls put a bird on her shoulder and wandered around the beach with him. It would´ve been a fantastic photo but I don´t like to take pictures of people, I need to get over that.

My friend from work is here with some of her mates. A total coincidence that she was coming to Mexico on holiday at the same time but when I told her about Isla she decided to come here too. It´s great to have someone around who I know in these early days. We went out to dinner last night and had a few beers at the beach bar. Everyone else was so incredibly drunk! The hostel is a real party place, for some reason I´ve not felt like partying like that and getting drunk. I really don´t want to suffer a hangover in this heat plus I´m enjoying getting up just after dawn and going for a swim.

This morning I woke up at early and went for a walk and a swim followed by huevos mexicana for breakfast. They are so delicious, scrambled eggs with onions, peppers, chilli and tomatoes. After writing this I´m going to find my Spanish school and get some lessons booked in. My few words make me understood when necessary but it´s nowhere near enough for travelling on into less touristy areas. This afternoon the hostel is organising a bike tour of the island. So far I´ve not gone more than a few hundred metres in any direction so it´ll be great to go and see the rest of the island. We´ll take in the turtle farm (I wish they´d use the word sanctuary, my friend thought they were actually farming them) and the mayan ruin at the other end of the island. It´ll be nice to do something more constructive, although I´ve chilled out I still can´t do the beach holiday thing. One day of that was enough.

Reckon I´ll stay here for another week or so, as well as the Spanish I also need to visit a school in the poorer part of the island. They teach English to the locals to help them get jobs in tourism and I bought them a few things for the school. More on that when I get there.

Hope you´re all well, don´t forget you can email me (click on the link to the right), let me know all the goss from home.

Omigod! I’m officially more jealous than on Xmas 84′ when my brother got a bike and I got a pair of wellies. It looks and sounds amazing and I’m sat here, working late wishing I could be there with you. I’m glad you’ve got the picture uploading sorted out as it must be hard to describe everything without some visual back-up. Although it’s making me even more jealous. And make sure you bring back that huevos mexicana recipe!
    Lots of love

    Hola precious,

Sitting here in the office bored off my tits I am inclined to feel very jealous of your adventures, but then I remember how hard you’ve worked for this, and how long you’ve been looking forward to it and I can’t be jealous.

I’m so glad you’re having a great time- and this is just the first couple of days!

    Good luck with your Spanish.

    Love,
    Bree
