Ready as I’ll ever be

Right, my stuff is stored, my arms are jabbed, my backpack is packed and my Spanish verbs are conjugated.

The last few weeks have felt really strange, it seems that when you’ve been planning something for ages and you get to the final stages you feel a bit numb about it. Saying goodbye to my boyfriend James is at the front of my mind so I’m only expecting to really feel the excitement of it all as I near Mexico.

I’ll be landing in Cancun on the afternoon of 7 October. Outside the airport I’ll be confronted with the golden arches of McDonalds so I’ll be straight out of there and off down the road to Puerto Juarez to take a ferry about 40 mins across the water out to Isla Mujeres. It’s a gorgeous island, only 5 miles long and half a mile wide. I’ve been there before but memories of my short stay are a haze of jet lag so I’m looking forward to seeing it properly. Reckon it’s a good starting point to ease myself in, quite touristy, small and easy to get around so it’s not too much of a challenge while I adjust, physically and mentally. It’s got a real community feel though and is very Mexican, unlike Cancun. I’ve organised my first 5 nights accommodation and a language school for some intense Spanish lessons, just a few doors up from my hostel.

I’m writing this from my boyfriend’s parents house in Bristol, part way through a tour of the South West to say goodbye to family. A very strange time, the whole trip seems totally unreal at the moment.

Next post will be from Isla Mujeres, Mexico, probably sometime on 8 October.

Take care all and thanks for all the lovely comments.

    ¡Hola Sharleen!
Feck! Where has all that time for preparation gone? With only 8 days feels like I’ve still got a brazilion things to do. Have a safe journey out to Mexico.

I’ll be somewhere in Peru/Ecuador/Bolivia/Chile/Brazil from 14th October to 5th December. If I haven’t been mangled, shredded, institutionalised, shot up tearing up the Inca Trail on my mountain bike, sandboarding, talking to friendly goats or inadvertently insulting the locals with my dodgy Spanish AND you’re in the neighbourhood, give us buzz as it would be great to see a friendly gringita.

    Hasta luegito,
    ’tish.
