Beachside in December

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

As a Floridian, I’m used to it being hot in December. Wearing shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops on Christmas day wouldn’t be surprising at all. This year my December got off to the best start ever…on the beach in the Canary Islands.

Let me first start off by re-capping my first ever traditional Thanksgiving dinner away from my family (last year doesn’t count, we ate chicken instead of turkey), which is what led to my impromptu holiday in Spain. The day itself was a bit sad because I had to work, but I did at least make an attempt to watch the Macy’s parade online even though the server was jammed with traffic and all I ever really got to see was a group of people standing around a phone booth in Times Square. I had made a couple of pumpkin pies to bring in to work to share with everybody and they went over really well! One guy, Jeff, had three slices, so they couldn’t have been that bad. For almost everybody it was their first ever introduction to pumpkin pies; the tentative looks on faces before taking a bite were priceless. I guess trying a vegetable-based dessert for the first time would make me little wary, too.

Barcelona Stinks

Sunday, June 19th, 2005

Sometimes I feel like I´m in Barcelona…oh wait! I am!

When I say Barcelona stinks, that is not to say that it isn´t a fun city. It just reeks, that´s all. When we were walking from our apartment to the Internet cafe we had to dodge several suspicious looking puddles whose origins began on the sides of the buildings. I had no idea just how touristy Barcelona would be until we got here yesterday evening. We hadn´t booked a hostel yet because we were going to wait till we got here to walk into a place we had found online, but when we arrived we spent about 45 minutes on a payphone trying to call places up. Everything was fully booked. The reception desk attendants practically laughed at us each time we asked if there were beds for 5 people. Apparently there is some massive music festival taking place and all of Europe booked their rooms months in advance–except for us. But it all worked out beautifully and we ended up getting apartments for our two nights here. Last night we stayed in a really nice place, and we just left our stuff in our new place. It´s three bedrooms, has a huge lounge area and a kitchen with a washing machine! We are in heaven…we´re about to go to the market to get some food to cook tonight since we have a stove.

Un Buen Tiempo en Madrid

If you all have weather half as nice as the weather here in Madrid, consider yourself lucky. The sun is shining, it got up to only about 76 today, and it is breezy and gorgeous. Flowers are everywhere, the trees ... [Continue reading this entry]
