Wellington

Drunk, drunk, drunk......St Patricks day somewhere in amongst it all......drunk, drunk!

As you may have guessed we didn't do a lot in Wellington, however we managed to have a few drinks here and there! It was completely out of our control as we arrived the day before St Pats day and the boys have never celebrated it before, so we had to make the effort! It was a great night - went to Molly Malones where they had a live irish band, the place was packed and everyone was singing, dancing and drinking guinness! Huge hangover the next day, so as is the way, we went back out the next night with some guys we met in the hostel. Walked for ages trying to find the belgian beer cafe (we miss the beer), only to find that it was closed at midnight on a Saturday night in the capital city! Gutted, ended up going to lots of cheesy bars instead and then of course a kebab to finish off the night - great night!

We did manage to fit in a bit of sightseeing in NZ's capital city though. We went to Te Papa, which is a huge museum & cost a ridiculous amount of money to build but is surprisingly free entry. It is very impressive with displays on everything from natural disasters (of which there have been a fair few in NZ) to Maori history and even a virtual bungy (which I couldn't do cos it was closed). We found it a bit too big to do it all in one day though - got a bit bored after a while walking round. Also took a ride in the cable car - which is highly over rated by Lonely Planet and also not a cable car in the sense that we brits know it - it's more like a tram going uphill. It took us to the Botanic Gardens, which we walked through and found to be a cheap (i.e free) and not unpleasant way to shift our hangovers. Also passed by the 'Beehive' which is the Parliamentary buildings and pretty impressive. Whilst photographing these, we heard the distant sound of bagpipes and, as you do when hearing bagpipes, we followed the sound! We walked for a while until we ended up at the back of someones garden listening to him practising (got carried away with the patriotism of the night before!).

And, I'm ashamed to say that's pretty much it - add in a few more beers at the hostel, couple of pizzas, lazy sunday spent in bed and then walking round the shops - thats our 4 days in Wellington! Still, we enjoyed ourselves and we really love Wellington. Very cool city - much nicer than Auckland. It's more laidback and chilled out but still has loads going on. It is very windy though - be warned!
