South India

Fresh air! We arrived at the Guntakal station in Andra Pradesh (I think I have my state correct) last week and stepped out to another world. One with warm days, blue skies and mostly clean air.

We stayed in Hampi, a village in Karnataka to do some sightseeing of the old Vijayangar capital. We ended up doing a lot of hiking. The scenery is beautiful in that area - huge boulders, gentle hills, lots of green banana fields and old temple ruins. Despite its remote location, the town was crowded with backpackers. I met someone in a restaurant that I hadn't seen in over ten years. It was a girl I went to high school with in Korea. Freaky! We're both on a year long RTW trip and it turns out that we both went to college in Iowa.

Currently, we're in Goa. I'd write more, but that might cut into my beach time. heh, heh. It really is beautiful here. I thought maybe there would be a lot of trash and development a la Hurghada. The government has restricted development on the beaches so they're not marred with breakers, seafood restaurants and hotels.

Are you seeing a lot of news about the tsunami? How far away is the affected area?

Cathy,
Your car got baptized a couple of times with snow. I think that it prefers Califonria to NY but I didn't tell it about the latest mud slides out there.

The tsunami hit the other side of the country from where we're currently at. We're going to be in Madras on the 20th -- that was one of the affected areas. But, we'll be further inland so probably won't see anything unless we travel to the coast.

Sounds like you are getting a chance to relax from your touring. We have been enjoying the sunshine also after a week of heavy rain. We haven't had any mud or flooding problems in town, so I guess we can count our blessings there. We're happy you are enjoying India.
