If the Heat Doesn't Kill Ya...

Wow, it's HOT. No, I'm not talking the kind of "living in the northwest and it's hot a few times in July" hot, I'm talking equatorial drenched with sweat, have to shower about 3 times a day HOT with humidity to match. The other night I sat down at the river after the sun had gone down, and the marble seat was still so hot that it burned my a$$... ;)

Speaking of the riverside, it's been insane. These Khmer really take the New Year seriously, they party for at least a couple weeks ahead of time, by playing games, dancing, and just generally hanging around in huge masses everywhere around town. I was down there earlier again today because it gives me a good excuse to leave the hotel room, (without spending money) and I sat watching the river go by. There were all these kids of various ages jumping into the filthy water and having a good time. There is a huge dike that goes up quite a bit to keep the city from flooding and dotted all along are these weak birds that don't have the energy to fly away. Up above nearer the street these vendors charge a small fee for people to free them, but the problem is that some have become so weak that they won't live and can't fly away. (I talked about this in another post about Wat Phnom). Anyway, there was this boy about 3 years old that had a whole handful of these poor birds and he would toss them into the air, they would fly a hundred feet or so and then drop and he'd go get them again. He just saw them as toys and I felt sorry for them. After I saw this I noticed at least 10 dead ones lying around. It's so sad to me because they are very pretty blue birds unlike anything we have in the NW.

Well, I think I can't help but lose weight even though I've been eating. There just aren't enough hours in the day to try to gain weight here with this heat, that's why nobody is fat here, I am convinced. Even just sitting here after the sun has gone down, I am wet with sweat. I'll be happy for the rainy season!

I'm going to cut this short because a friend of mine just showed up that I haven't seem since my last visit-- Chea! I'll tell you about my apartment that I am getting in about a week in my next installment! Bye all!

You can't feel sorry for the birds. That is what the work on. I saw some of this kinda stuff in Philippines. We were warned not to 'fall for it' on an official basis.

It was not just animals - it also involved people, of course. Do NOT ask me about hot pesos on top of beer bottles and what happened!
