A day at the beach

This morning I got up after a nice nights' sleep, and had a great breakfast that is included with the price of my room here at the hotel.

At noon I met my driver and told him that I wanted to go to a school outside of town to give away the school supplies I brought with me. We left town on an unpaved road, and went quite a distance, maybe 20 kilometers. It ended up being exactly the type of school I had in mind: I wanted one that was poor, unlike the ones that are in town and the children even wear school uniforms. This school only had benches like bleachers, and had a thatched roof and shack. Unfortunately, the kids weren't there at the time we arrived. It must have been about 1:30 or so. They were not due back until 4:00 apparently. (Khmer frequently take long breaks at mid-day for the heat.) So my driver took me to a nearby beach where I played and swam for a couple of hours. I found some beautiful shells, which are very much unlike what we have of course. The water is very warm, like when we went to the Caribbean, and the day was perfect, about 85 degrees. The beach sand is not as white as the Caribbean and the water is not as azure blue, but close on both counts and still just as pleasant, in fact maybe moreso because I had this particular beach to myself save for the very occasional passerby, some of which were cows. :)

We went back to the school but apparently the teacher pretty much starts whenever he likes, and probably wouldn't be there for another hour. So we left with the intention of coming back tomorrow to deliver what I brought. Maybe I'll go buy some paper as well. It was too heavy to pack with me from the US.

I finally tried a bubble tea last night, and it was really good. It was a coconut creamy flavor with tapioca pearls in it. The same thing in the US would be about $5-6, but here they are $1.

I am having fun, and hoping that I didn't get really burnt today on the beach. I didn't bring my suntan lotion because I wansn't expecting to spend time on the beach, but it was fun and worth it as long as I don't get it as bad as Sean did on our previous trip. When we went up to Udong mountain, the poor kid got his face burnt so badly, he was miserable. I was wearing a baseball cap most of the time, so I think I'll live.

Well, take care everyone. I'll write again in another day or so. There just isn't as much to say in the last couple of days other than I am relaxing and enjoying myself. Talk to you all later! :)
