September 06, 2004Hello from Bangkok!
Hi Everyone! It's been a crazy couple of days for us! Bangkok is even more insane than any travel books you may ever look at. There is an estimated 10 million people crammed in here, and I believe it! The pollution and crowds are horrendous. Sean and I made the decision to leave Bangkok a couple days early and head to Phnom Penh, then Siem Reap. Bangkok has been great in some ways; the food and clothing has been cheap and literally *everywhere* you go, but so have huge crowds, and much smog and pollution. Sean and I went to Wat Pho today and saw the reclining Buddha as well as all of the grounds there. It was an amazing place! We wanted to go to the Grand Palace, but they insist that you wear long sleeves and long pants, and we were wearing shorts. The heat and steamy air here is just oppressive. I don't know how some people can even stand to wear long sleeves just for the palace! Right now we are in an internet cafe on Kaoh San Road. We are waiting for the travel agent to print the airline tickets up for us. After this we are going to head back to the room for a little rejuvination, (aka a shower and change of clothes) and then try to head out for the infamous Patpong district this evening. I'm not sure I can do it though, I am exhausted! :) Last night we went to Muay Thai, (Thai Boxing) and it was really wild. These guys have no rules and just kick the crap out of each other. I had to leave after only about 7 bouts though as I was exhausted, probably still from jet lag. We really enjoyed the live music they had, it was about 4 guys with strange instruments that reminded me a lot of Buddhist chanting music. We practically had the place to ourselves until about halfway through the first bout, (probably because we paid 800 baht each) but then all of a sudden all these Thai people walked in. We got the idea that after everything begins there is a cheaper price for the non-farang, but what can you do? Oh well. Comments
Its' great to hear you are having a great time despite the jet lag. G. Posted by: G. Tribe on September 6, 2004 09:25 PMI, too, feel like I am there with you! Thought you would send out a regular e-mail to everyone and was getting slightly worried. Please look for Black Star Sapphires. I found some nice ones in Pattaya Beach Thailand when I was a Sailor on USS Tarawa (both times). Got other 'naughty' things including a gold capped Tiger's Tooth and don't want you to bring one of them back! I would like to make up a couple of nice rings with the sapphires - along with other stones. Try to get some great digital photos and e-mail them to yourself so you can do more. Looking forward to your next posting. Love and Kisses Hi -- Sounds like you guys are having a ball. It's an adventure and that is what life should be. Love - Grandpa & Grandma Todd Posted by: Jim and Carol Todd on September 8, 2004 04:22 AMOK, so it's 3 days now since your last post. Some of us are anxious to hear the next chapter ! How's Cambodia?
