Our Basic Itinerary

In a nutshell version:

Arrive Bangkok, stay for about 5 days to 1 week. Fly to Phnom Penh, stay for about 2-3 days. Travel to Siem Reap by hydrofoil boat, stay for about 5-6 days. Cross the border again into Thailand and spend the balance of our time (and my birthday) on some beach, possibly Koh Samet or Koh Chang before heading back to Bangkok for our return flight home.

Expanded version:

Sean & I will arrive in Bangkok at around 1:00pm their time after flying for sheesh-- I'm not sure how long... I think well over 24 hours with all of the stops. I'm sure we will be dragging some hiney and will probably more or less flop from exhaustion for a few hours or overnight once we arrive. After some serious recharging, the next day we will start to explore Bangkok. We have 5 nights at the hotel that we booked this package with, so in that time we can get acclimated to our new surroundings. I expect that we may stay on another couple of days after that for a total of about 1 week before moving on to Cambodia. It just depends on whether or not we feel we've seen enough of the city or not. There are lots of sights to see in and around Bangkok, like the Grand Palace, Khao San Road, Wat Arun and the floating markets, so boredom is highly unlikely. But sooner or later it will be time to move on for a change of scenery and experience.

Our plan after that is to fly from Bangkok to Phnom Penh. The trip is supposed to take just over an hour and from what I've read, in that time you go from one extreme to another (affluent to poverty). I expect that we will only spend about 2-3 days in PP before catching the high speed boat that takes us up the Mekong and through the Tonle Sap lake up to Siem Reap, but I also want to have a lot of flexibility built in so that we stay in places we like longer if we choose to. The hydrofoil boat trip takes about 5 hours, and I hope there will be a lot of countryside to see along the way, but I read in Lonely Planet that the Tonle Sap is so massive that for a long time when you cross you can't even see any shoreline. The Tonle Sap expands to cover a huge area every year in the monsoon, (which is when we are visiting) and shrinks again in the dry season. Since we leave PP early in the morning and arrive at Siem Reap in the early afternoon we will probably then spend a couple hours backpacking around to choose a decent place to stay for the next 5 days or so. Then after many many Wats it will be time to think about heading back into Thailand.

What happens next is still up in the air. We will probably choose Koh Semet on the advice of a nice Thai lady I know, especially since it is only a couple hours' journey outside of Bangkok. Whatever we choose I think it would be good to slow bake on a beautiful white-sand beach for at least 5 days before heading home. When you can have a nice cabana room on the beach for only about $20 a night, why not? I mean, it is a vacation, right? ;) Besides, happy birthday to me... happy birthday to me...
