Just walk slowly!

Just walk slowly and make your moves predictable! Yeah right...then just step out in front of all the motorbikes that are barreling down the road and hope that they will swerve to avoid you! But seriously that is what you must do to cross the road here in Vietnam! It is absolute mayhem...and that is what is so fun about it!

I think Hanoi was the worst. I was terrified just to step off of the curb and try to cross the road, just hoping that the mopeds and cars will go around me. And just to stop in the middle of the street and have them go around you takes a lot of courage! Staring down the road and looking at no less than 50 motorbikes coming your way is just a daily routine here. I had made my way across many streets by now, staying in Hanoi for a few days, but there was this one corner near the edge of the lake that I could never just seem to cross right. One time as I was waiting on this precarious corner to try to time it correctly so as to not right walk "right" in front of a car and get squashed like frogger...I think I must have looked like a chicken or something because I kept stepping off the curb and then back up again as soon as I realized a moped was barreling straight towards me. An old woman walked up to me, just grabbed my arm and started to pull me across the street with her! We just stepped right off the curb and didn't stop. She would stare down each motorbike as they approached and sort of pointed her finger at them to tell them that they were to go around us. As we slowly made our way across the street I couldn't control myself from laughing at this situation. It was truly memorable. And thanks to that woman, I made it across with out getting flattened like in frogger! Game over...I WIN!
