Where has all the spicy food and coconut cakes gone?

So can somebody please tell me where has all of the spicy food and delicious coconut cakes in Thailand gone to? I have been prepairing myself for hot and spicy food here for awhile now, but it is still yet to come! I have tried hostel food, street food, market food, and even food in restaurants...but still nothing has really been spicy. Now I know that I don't have a tounge of steel or anything like that...but I really think everyone just looks at me and doesn't add ANY spices to the food what so ever!

Now I know as I write this tomorrow my tounge and mouth will just be sweltering with heat as I inhale some curry or something, but I just had to say it. I guess I have been a bit hesitant to say..."spicy please!" thinking then that I will not be able to tollerate or even eat the food at all, but really nothing has even been remotely spicy! Darnet! What am I doing wrong!

And now I can't find these delicious coconut cakes that I ate, sadly only once, when I was in Ayutthaya. There were so many of them there in the market, that I just assumed that they were an all over Thailand type of food...but I guess I was wrong and maybe they were only more like a local specialty...since coming to Chiang Mai I haven't seen them anywhere. Sadly at first I didn't eat them since I didn't know what they were, and they came in a variety of unnatural colors, like purple, green, pink and white. But finally Aimee adn I tried a box in Ayutthaya for breakfast and they were so delicious!!!!! I have now been on the hunt for more! So far unsuccessful!

Just letting you know I am looking out for the spices and of course the coconut cakes now while I am traveling throughout Thailand...and if you are still in the Bangkok area (Nicola) eat them up!

Do you remember me, David? I am a friend of your Uncle Gerry's and spent a Christmas or Thanksgiving with you over at your Mom's house about 4 years ago. Gerry keeps me posted about all your travels and we have been traveling vicariously through you the whole while!

I just wanted to comment on your Thai food experience. I was in Thailand 10 years ago, and I deeeeply love Thai food, *almost* as hot as possible. And most of the food I had, I couldn't get it any other way than incendiary! I'm wondering if a) times have changed or b) its a gender thing? Have you been saying "rot jhat" - hot? I find I totally suck at tonal languages, and usually create more confusion when I try. Maybe you should keep a pepper in your pocket and point to it enthusiastically!

I tried to weasle in to as many kitchens as possible, myself, and really fell in love with Thai kitchen techniques! I also was struck by how seriously regional some of the cuisine really is. I'm wondering if that comes into play in your search for rice cakes. You should definitely try the night market once back in Krung Thep - theres a whole lot of regional food there - but again, that was 10 years ago.

And Gerry and I were talking last night and are hoping for a Thai meal out of you next time you land home!

Hi David!
Of course I remember you! How could I forget the man that makes the best cream puffs in the world! Thanks for the advice on the cullinary aspects of Thailand! I was figuring out that the food here is regional... just like Japan. So now that I am back in Chiang Mai for the day, I am loading up on the mango sticky rice, since I don't know when I will get to eat that again!
I'd love to cook for you and Gerry when I come home...when ever that is! I am sure I can locate the ingredients that we cooked with in an Asian market in S.F.
Thanks for reading and having an interest in my travels! But what will everyone do (that is those who are living vicariously through me) when I finally return home??? Maybe others will relocate their passports then!
