Broome

I was in Broome for a few days and had a great time. Zoe, Roy, Simon and I spent the days on the beach or sitting in cafes, then having a few beers at night. No more cheap goon for us! We even made it to a couple of classy restaurants and Sun Pictures, the old deckchair cinema. Broome was gorgeous: warm, laid-back and friendly, with the amazing Cable Beach and its eye-popping sunsets just down the road.

We spent the last afternoon going around the tiny Broome Museum, which was like someone's attic - random old photos and bits of tat from the 1970s - then had some cheesecake in a cafe overlooking the mangroves on Town Beach. It's a tough life all this lounging around in cafes and bars! We walked back to the hostel, the Kimberly Klub, which I can highly recommend despite the naff misspelling. There was a swimming pool, bar, pool tables (I was on top form as usual) and hammock chairs, as well as spacious, clean rooms. When we got back, I went to put my stuff in the room and just happened to find the reservation print-out of my flight to Darwin at 20.40 that evening. I had booked this at the Tourist Information Office in Exmouth, and the helpful lady there had gone through it with me at great length, talking me through every single term and condition and endlessly repeating the departure and arrival times. So when I absent-mindedly opened it and saw that the flight actually left at 18.35, I couldn't quite take it in. Wild-eyed, I found someone with a watch who told me it was 17.30. I grabbed my bags and ran down to get a taxi. It was only after I'd frantically ordered one, that I realised the guy with the watch had got it wrong and it was only 17.00. By the time I'd explained it to Zoe, Simon and Roy who'd come over to see why I was in full panic mode, the taxi had drawn up and I had to chug the beer they'd bought for me and head off. The airport was about 5 minutes away and the check-in desk wasn't even open when I got there.

Still, it had - indeed - been real.
