May 13, 2005The South-West
I had a couple of days relaxing in Perth, doing very little. Mark, who I met in Sakhalin, very kindly let me stay at his house, and I enjoyed catching up on sleep in his incredibly comfortable bed and meeting Jen, who he lived with. I eventually prised myself away from the bed and travelled around the South West of Australia for a few days. I had been looking forward to seeing the Tingle Trees for ages - pretty much just because I liked the word "tingle" - and I got to see them from a suspended metal walkway in the Valley of the Giants. Very exciting! I also climbed Castle Rock, where I realised that I'm even more unfit than I had previously thought, and explored the Lake Cave. The scenery around the area is beautiful: very bucolic, with lots of cows and sheep, but also very Australian, with an abundance of native trees like Gums and Karris. There are some gorgeous beaches, with very few people around. The towns were small and picturesque, and places like Margaret River were very laid-back and friendly. |
