The Plan

This entry is slightly technical as it relates to flights and itineraries. If you’re not interested in that read my bio instead. Click here.

From the title of this blog you will already know two of my destinations but in this section I’ll lay out my plan in a little more detail. First I'll explain a little about tickets. On a Round the world (RTW) trip you have a choice of two ways of doing it. You can buy a RTW ticket which is probably slightly easier and cheaper or you can buy one way tickets as you go which is more flexible. For a full discussion on the merits of the two different types go here.

While some hardcore (read ‘snobby’) travellers look down on RTW tickets they are in reality fairly flexible. You generally have a mileage limit (ours was 29,000) and you make your route as you please according to where the airlines which are in your RTW alliance fly to.

The tickets generally allow you to change the dates of the flights for free. This is clearly very useful because, well, quite simply if a place is shit then why would you want to stick around? When you go to a place that you know very little of it’s really hard to know how long you want to spend there. For example we are going to Tonga for 12 days. Does that seem like an arbitrary amount? Well it is. A thought I often have is that I hope to discover my favourite city or my favourite beach or my favourite restaurant in the world. They could be anywhere. In a sense there is a ‘great unknown’ factor to it all and I really like that.

As such I won’t give the precise dates (except the first one) as I’m sure some will change.

8th August – London to Bangkok
1 month in South East Asia travelling around Thailand, through Malaysia and down to Singapore.
Singapore - Brisbane, Australia
2 months in Australia, we’ll be doing some Conservation work in Victoria but apart from that it’s open.
Melbourne - Christchurch, New Zealand
1 month in NZ
Auckland-Tonga
2 weeks in Tonga. I know very little about Tonga or indeed what we’ll be doing there.
Tonga - Samoa
2 weeks in Samoa.
Samoa - LA
1 week in California and we’ll probably go to San Diego. It will be Christmas time if things stay as they are.
LA – Toronto - Havana
1 month in Cuba. We hope to travel around the island but this might be quite difficult as Cuba is really not set up for independent travel.
Havana – Toronto - London

There you have it, my next six months.

If you have any questions about RTW tickets I’ll do my best to answer them. My email is: buddhamarxandme@yahoo.co.uk
