Dahab II

The next few days in Dahab were pretty relaxing and not much went on. We checked into a new room at the Penguin Hotel which had big windows overloooking the Red Sea from which we could watch the sunrise. We snorkeled the reef right in front of our hotel and saw lots of great fish including several lion fish, which we had not seen at the Blue Hole. We had our first cockroach kill of the trip... a small but speedy fellow who had somehow crept into our bathroom.

I celebrated my 33rd birthday. The celebrations started with pancakes with fruit and ice cream for breakfast and ended with a great meal at one of the local restaurants at which we had got to know the owner. We had awesome seafood including huge prawns in a coconut curry sauce with fresh fruit and the cook had made a cake for me which was served with a lot of ice cream and fruit. This was so large that we shared it with all the other customers in the restaurant. Also on my birthday I went to a Turkish bath, which was very nice and relaxing although I would not recommend it to those who are uncomfortable spending long amounts of time totally naked in front of an Egyptian man they just met.

The next day was another epic day of traveling that started with a nine hour bus ride from Dahab to the Cairo airport. During this trip we passed by tunnel under the Suez Canal. Security to enter the tunnel is tight and everyone on the bus had to disembark and our bags were thoroughly searched.

At the airport, we had a seven hour wait for our flight. The flight itself took six hours to get to Nairobi but it stopped in Kartoum on the way so getting a good sleep was out of the question.

And now we are in East Africa, but that is another story that Kevin will have to tell soon...

Im glad you had cake on your birthday, for some reason I was really concered that you might be stuck in the middle of the desert with no chocolate for miles around!
