Big guys foot

We had a memorable day in redwood country.

In the morning we visited the 'Trees of Mystery' and my boys enjoyed climbing onto the boots of the giant Paul Bunyan outside. In the trees of mystery park itself we wondered at the amazing size of the coastal redwoods and their tenacity for life. The arial sky train took us high onto a mountain ridge where we looked out towards the ocean and saw an Ospreys nest.

In the afternoon we saw wild elks in a meadow and then had an eerie ride along an unpaved road through the woods where the road dust had coated the trees and undergrowth making them ghostly grey as the sun rays sparkled through the canopy overhead.

Arriving at the end of the road we walked through Fern Canyon, an enchanted place with vertical walls covered in emerald green ferns with a small stream meandering back and forth across the rounded pebbles of the flat canyon floor.

On Gold Bluffs beach we waded in the surf and picked through the driftwood sculpted by the crashing Pacific surf.

To round the day off we drove through the Klamath drive through tree and saw Emus racing around their enclosure.

That night I recounted the days events with my boys and asked them what was the best thing that happened all day. After some deep thought, Andrew pronounced 'climbing on that big guys foot !' Who says travel is wasted on the young ?
