October 05, 2004Turtle
Jeebie, my friend in Qingtian invited us to lunch and I went along to the market with her. We bought a heap of veges and then went to the meat section. We bought a bit of meat, nothing too disgusting and then moved on to the seafood section. I finally convinced her that snake and frog were not things I liked, having tried them once before I could say this honestly. When she pointed to the turtle I was lost for words. Never having eaten it and knowing it was a Chinese favourite I was trying tactfully to decline. I failed dismally and as a result we chose a nice plump turtle. Next thing we are asking the man to kill it and I was carrying a dead turtle home, knowing all eyes would be on me when I had to sample it. The bottom line on this one is that turtle should be left to swim freely in the sea, pond or wherever they want - because as far as taste goes, they're disgusting!!! Comments
