Woohoo! A week off at last! No more long bus trips for us! Santiago is great because of it's proximity to everything from vineyards, ski slopes, beaches and more. Not that we saw too much of these things though, because it's also a decent city to potter about in and chill (see the last update for the reason why this might be appealing to us).
Visiting the vineyards sounded sedate enough, so one day we took a half hour trip out to the Maipo Valley, to see the Undurraga vineyard. The guide was very open and took us through the whole process of making their different wines; from grape to bottle. It certainly takes a lot of effort to create the 15 million litres they produce annually here (and allows them to be one of the biggest exporters of wine in Chile). With a renewed appreciation for wine, we had to try a bottle for ourselves. To help us do this, the other girl with us on the tour, called Fanny, joined us in the well kept gardens surrounding the vineyard. Being a local living in Santiago she took us out later and showed us how things are done here.
During our short time in Santiago we also visited a nearby town with a port, Valparaiso. This special place covered with hills and colourful buildings is well known for it's seafood and beauty. To navigate the hills, there are many antiquated lifts throughout, and were charming to say the least. It's a wonder that these contraptions made out of wood, ropes and pulleys are still working in their original state. The views from the top of the hills were magnificent.
After our brief stay in this city, it was time to start travelling again. This time crossing the Pacific to reach New Zealand, where the 13 hour flight would take us to another world.

Por fin una semana para descansar!!! que bien! No más largos viajes en autobús, en Santiago de Chile estaba todo muy cerca, viñedos, playas, la metrópolis tenía rincones interesantes y los alrededores estaban plagados de viñedos.
A tan solo media hora del centro estaba la viña Undurraga. El guía, un miembro de la familia Undurraga, nos llevó por el recinto donde había jardines que pertenecían a la casa donde la familia solía vivir. Luego nos mostró las cepas y todo el proceso a seguir para crear el vino blanco y tinto e incluso llegamos a ver la bodega privada de la familia. Definitivamente hay que estar bien organizado para producir 15.000.000 de litros al año!
Celebramos nuestro nuevo conocimiento sobre el vino compartiendo una botella con una chica chilena que conocimos, Fanny quien tuvo la gentileza de invitarnos a comer a su casa. Allí degustamos las caseras y ricas empanadas chilenas (un poco como las gallegas pero más grandes y muy ricas!)
La siguiente excursión la hicimos a Valparaíso, un pintoresco pueblo costero también cerca de la ciudad. Este especial lugar rodeado de montañas es conocido por su buen marisco y su originalidad. Tenía ascensores que te llevaban hasta la cima donde las vistas y las casas eran preciosas.
Y de nuevo a viajar. Esta vez cruzando el pacífico hasta llegar a Nueva Zelanda donde un vuelo de 13 horas nos abrió otro mundo.

Great to see you are still having a ball of a time! My envy knows no bounds as I read your continued exploits, but keep them rolling in! I look forward to reading the updates. Hard to believe over six months has gone by since you left - you'll be back before you know it!

Nice to know we're not forgotten about yet! It is a bit unreal how fast the time goes by... and scarily we really will be back before we know it (if the next 6 months go by as fast as the last).
